cardinalsvoice Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 The Battle of War Memorial takes place this Friday night with Mayfield and Graves County with the winner having bragging rights for another 365 days. These two teams come in off of big wins...Graves County over Paducah Tilghman 21-14 and Mayfield's huge come from behind win over Hopkinsville 35-34. Mayfield will bring a 2-1 mark into the contest with wins over Caldwell County and Hoptown, with their loss being a 21-14 decision to Marshall County. While the Eagles come in with an umblemished record of 3-0 with wins over Heath, Calloway County, and Tilghman...so the strength of schedule goes to Mayfield as the Cards have played tougher competition in the first three weeks. This should be Graves first real test of the season as while Tilghman will be a good team by the end of the year they are still young...and you know Mayfield will be flying high after their win last Friday in the final minute over Hopkinsville. I believe that Mayfield can stop the eagles wing T offense as I believe the speed factor goes to Mayfield. Wiggins and McManus are good backs just not very fast and I don't believe that Graves County's line can open up the holes that Graves will need to win the game. Plus I don't know if Graves County can stop Mayfield offense. I see Mayfield getting their third win of the season and knocking off Graves County 28-14
WKYfootballguy Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 I think this will be a game of who comes out the least flat...:creepy: Both teams are coming off huge wins! Both will be most likely over-amped up! I see this game being close as I think Mayfield's "D" will hold Graves running game in check. A game of ball control and field position. I also see Graves getting after Mayfield QB Shelton. Shelton will have to dump it off to his back and ends to be successful. Again, I see the kicking game as being the big difference and I'll take the Cards in a close one! Mayfield-24 Graves County-20  :ylsuper:
GoBigRed Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 I would say that is a fair assesment of this game, I am not sure about Graves' kicking game but Tommy McNutt has proven that he can put the ball in the endzone on every kick, which will force Graves to go 80yds on each possession, which gives Mayfield another advantage in this game as well. Graves does have some offensive weapons, but not like Emmanuel Taylor, which Mayfield displayed the ability to stop him in the 4th quarter of the HopTown game. Mayfield lost a key player to injury in Landon Heath, but apparently has a nice repacement in the Heathcott boy, only a sophmore, lol. This could play a factor in Mayfield's running game but again, Adam Shelton proved in the HopTown game that he is a leader and displayed one of the best passing games of his career. Even with all this, this game could still come down to the wire cause Graves' defense appears to be more potent than Hopkinsville's was. I like your score in this one cardsvoice, 28-14.
cardinalsvoice Posted September 5, 2006 Author Posted September 5, 2006 I agree that Graves County's defensive stats have looked very impressive this season especially holding Tilghman to that low of an offensive standpoint with David Jones at QB...although from talking to the Tilghman radio crew and after taking a look at some of the film from last week I can agree with them that Tilghman this year is down other than the two Jones kids in the backfield. So it will be an interesting matchup this Friday to see just how much playing quality opponents in the first three weeks for Mayfield matchup to the quality of opponents that Graves have played in their first three weeks. Will also be a good test for Mayfield's Defenense without Landon Heath helping to plug up the middle to see if Mayfield's run defense still shuts down the middle running game. As the Cards have done a really good job of shutting down the plays up the middle it is the outside that they have a hard time shutting down and when teams spread the field...something Graves has not shown a tendency to be able to do very much. If Mayfield can get up on Graves early and make them have to abandon the running game to go to the air it could be a long night for Graves. as I am still not convinced that Sanderson can beat you with his arm especially seeing how the Eagles do not have the speed that Mayfield's DB's have in Murrell and Sherrill..but if they can take the early lead or keep it close heading into the 4th quarter it could be a ballgame. I will stick with my original score of 28-14 Mayfield...but should be fun with this city/county rivalry and we have seen some games go the way they should and some that have not. GO CARDS
