Kneeling during the National Anthem

Featured Replies

I do not know if this thread is more appropriate for this forum or for the Controversial Issues forum. I trust the judgment of the moderators for the right decision. There were articles in both last Friday's Kentucky New Era and the Todd County Standard from last week of four Todd Central football players kneeling during the playing of the National Anthem, following the actions of Colin Kapernick. Yet, these players have not been punished for this due to it being protected by the US Constitution. The Todd County School Superintendent, Wayne Benningfield, was quoted that he talked with other school superintendents across Kentucky and says this is happening in other places as well. Can anyone confirm and see if this happening at other places in the Commonwealth among athletes, band members, cheerleaders, fans, etc.

Well maybe they want to get noticed. I am not sure but I think they have won like 15 games in the last 10 years. I am not for this behavior because I feel a lot of them have no real understanding of why they are doing it other than the social aspects they see going on with the TV and press.

Let's not act like the kids don't know what's going on in America...it doesn't take a ton of research to see what has led up to this point.

I can tell you where it did not happen and where the flag and the National Anthem was given utmost respect.

At the Franklin-Simpson / Warren Central game played at Warren Central. Central had their ROTC color guard present the colors at mid-field. From the time the Flag was brought on the field until it left the field everyone stood and no one moved until the Color Guard left the field.

This may be the result of Central having so many kids whose parents have immigrated from war torn countries (Serbia, Bosnia, etc) where freedom did not exist and everyday was fraught with danger. They understand what we have and show respect.

I will not criticize those who chose to protest in whatever way they desire because that is part of the freedom we enjoy.

During a freshmen contest with St. Xavier, Male had one player take a knee. I noticed one staff member for Jeffersontown take a knee as the team was in the locker room during the Anthem prior to playing Trinity.

Sorry to risk not being anywhere close to politically correct, but this whole police brutality against black Americans has been distorted by our media to the expense of hard working, concerned law enforcement personnel. The numbers of death by policemen last year showed that white Americans represented 52%, Hispanics 27%, and black Americans 24%. Yet we have professional (anybody wonder where Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton gain their incomes?) civil rights activists that continue to stir the divisiveness and make the bridges of racial harmony that much more difficult to navigate. Yes, there are instances (against whites, Hispanics and blacks alike) that are unexcusable and those are to be dealt with accordingly; but, to paint the uncontrollable picture of police and society racism serves only those with special agendas. As Coach Cal warned the Wildcats, before they choose to follow the Kaepernek lead, they should make sure they are not being used by someone else's agenda (my recollection of what he said in LexHerald article).

Question: when you are at home watching on tv, did you get up off the couch and stand for the national anthem when they play it. I never really thought about it until I heard it for the Sunday night football game.
