Mr.Network Posted October 10, 2016 Posted October 10, 2016 I'm reading a book about the Chicago Bears titled "Bear With Me", written by George Halas' grandson Patrick McCaskey. In the book, it states that George's brother, Walter, coached football and baseball at Somerset High School after graduating from University of Illinois and playing minor league baseball that summer. I believe it would have been 1917-1918. I never knew this.
Jumper_Dad Posted October 10, 2016 Posted October 10, 2016 Hmmm...I'd never made that connection before. I had seen his name, but had no idea of the connection...Cool!!!
Jumper_Dad Posted October 10, 2016 Posted October 10, 2016 Walter Halas Notre Dame Men's Basketball :: UND.COM :: The Official Site of Notre Dame Athletics 1920-21 to 1922-23 Halas attended the University of Illinois where he starred in baseball, basketball and football for three years. After graduating, he immediately accepted the head coaching position at Somerset Central High School in Kentucky. He moved on to coach at Davenport (Iowa) High School before accepting the position at Notre Dame. In his three seasons as coach of the Irish, he struggled to a 25-39 record (.391). Halas was the brother of the famous Chicago Bear head coach George Halas.

Also former 49ers great Roger Craig. And I used to live in Somerset. For an additional weird Davenport-Notre Dame tie, 1947 Heisman winner Johnny Lujack from Notre Dame, after playing a few seasons for the Chicago Bears and serving as an NDU assistant, eventually settled in Davenport, where later took over his father-in-law's Chevy dealership.
Mr.Network Posted October 11, 2016 Author Posted October 11, 2016 Is there a site or source for Somerset football history? They were a very early rival of Stanford football. If the early scores are available, I could fill in some missing information in my research.
