Whitley County vs Shelby County (Predictions)

Recommended Posts

Whitley has a three hour bus trip and they are coming off a thrashing at North Hardin. Shelby is also coming off a loss. Last years game was a hard fought contest with Shelby prevailing at the end. Shelby is favored coming into the game and they are at home.

I believe Whitley would be a bigger threat if they would line up and run straight at you. Their line is big and strong. Eventhough their passing game is effective, I feel they would be better serve to run straight at teams.

I agree.

Whitley takes another loss but will only make them stronger for district play. They may be the best 0-3 team in the state.

I will field that question SouthernCross. I think Whitley has had good line play and good defensive play in the first two weeks. Whitley looked like the better team against Bell County however, they threw an interception for a td, missed two extra point conversions, got a td taken away for a penalty and missed out on two red zone posessions. I thought Whitley's line held their own against North Hardin, as did, the defense (gave up 2 td's). The offense gave up four td's on turnovers.

I think Whitley would be much better, if they could find a way to augment their spread offense, with a power set from time to time. Maybe run a couple of series, per game, in the wing-t or maybe just change up in the middle of a series and run a few plays out of a power set.

Whitley's QB is not a real running threat and unless the passing game is good enough to drop the line backers, over 10 yards off the line of scrimage, the fullback is not going anywhere. This becomes a big problem in short yardage situations or in the red zone. Keep in mind, out of the shotgun, the linemen are never actually coming to a 3 point stance and they are never pushing up the field. The linemen basically set into a pass protection stance and protect, the line movement is actually backward into a pocket.

If the line is moving backwards, there is really only one running play, that has a chance, which is the draw whether the QB runs or the fullback runs. Whitley has it's most physical line in years but, in the spread their job is not to blow people off the line, it is to protect the passer. Whitley's offense moved the ball well against Bell but, it was completely stalled against North Hardin. In the spread, there has to be a deep threat evey play, to open up the short passing routes. Against North Harden, Whitley was forced to throw the short out nearly every play due to a good blitz and tough man-man, safety coverage, on the deep routes; consequently, the linebackers did not drop, and the corners never dropped more than 5 yards. The corners simply jammed and released just waiting to pop the short out. The short outs were open enough for a completion but, the corners restricted the gains to 1 or 2 yards per completion. They also picked off a few balls for touchdowns. The short out inside your own 25 is extremely dangerous and Whitley proved it Saturday.

Bottom line, I think many people are questioning how well Whitleys personel fits the spread because they have extremely limited outside speed, a non-running QB, and they have not shown the ability to complete the 20 yard laser passes (a question of arm strength or timing, I do not know). On the other hand, they have a big strong offensive line, some good power backs and a stingy defense.

It is early and time will tell. Whitley's best years have come with power football. Until something other than power football is proven successful, the old fan base is going to question what is happening. As I said, time will tell.

North Hardin is a legit top ten team. Whitley made mistakes, but you can't blame it all on the QB. I bet if you watch the film, you would see lots of other people making mistakes but ones that did not stick out as much. I would say that McCumbers is the starter for a reason, although it may be that there is nobody else at this time.

Every coach has his system, and Black's is passing. Campbells was running and the power game. Give Black time, and he will have the Colonels up and throwing with success.

Are you saying Whitley would be 2-0 if they were running the ball down people's throat...

Thanks MM but I can speak for myself. What I meant by my statement is our players are built to play a physical running style game. Until we can force it down someone's throat when we need to, it will be a long year. You have to have both threats. (running/passing) It will come in time and I agree with MM that it would be good to see a powerset in the middle of a drive from time to time to keep the D off ballance. The passing attack is great we just need to throw in a little more power running in the mix. If you will remember against Bell we could drive but get stopped inside the 20. The reason we were driving was because of the passing attack mixed with the running attack. Then inside the 20 a few times we threw the ball 3 or 4 times= tornover! We need a little power game in there somewhere, and I believe you will start to see it as the season goes on. Good luck tonight.

The Whitley teams I have always seen have been smashmouth ,and that played to their advantage. They have always had really big lineman and backs that could grind out yardage. I don't see them as having the type of players that a spread offense would normally have. If Whitley tries to get into a shootout with teams that have better skill players, then it could be a long season. Also, a long bus ride doesn't help either, I say Shelby wins it 21-7.

first the fans were smarter than Coach Campbell, they said he should pass more. Now they are smarter than coach black, he should run more. It seems as though everyone has all the answers. I personally think BOTH coaches did/do a good job and the fans should cheer and not try to coach.

While your comments may not be meant to be critical, all they do is start to drive a small wedge in the system and create doubt. AND, I mean this in the most respectful way, most fans don't know near as much as they think they do. When they attend all practices, weight lifting sessions, film breakdown sessions, coaches meetings, deal with the players all day THEN MAYBE you might have close to enough info to start making suggestions. And that would ONLY be if you had enough knowledge to be on the staff (most fans think they do but don't)

Since none of you were hired for the job, I'd suggest that you leave the coaching to Black and staff, they are more than capable of determing the best course of action. You have to remember, Black isn't here to build a team, he's here to rekindle a championship caliber program. It might mean more bumps in the road in the short term, but in the long run - the program will be far better off.

Mountainmut, topgun and others - quit your griping and questions, jump on board, it will be a fun ride. It may not be as exciting this year, but it will down the road!

Well Said. Whitley will have to crawl before they can walk. Coach Black will take a few lumps but in the long run his offense will do well. From what I am hearing play calling by the OC has been a big part of the problem.
