The NewCath softball team held their annual awards banquet on Sunday (8-14) at Pompilios Pompilios Restaurant, and a big THANK YOU to NewCath volunteer assistant coach Mike Mazzei (owner of Pompilios) for EVERYTHING, as well as, Head Coach Denny Barnes.

 

Awards given out........

 

Academic Award - Sr. Olivia Gross. In 3 varsity seasons she only appeared in 25 games, mostly as a pinch-hitter, collecting 3 hits. However, she was always there to root on her teammates, when most kids would have seen the "writing on the wall" and given up. There is a reason why Coach Barnes said, "she is the only girl I've ever let do her homework on the bench". An Honor student, she will be going on to Thomas More College on an Academic Scholarship.

 

Thoroughbred Award - So. Lexy Breen. This award is given to the player that best exemplifies a true "team player" as well as, produces on the field and in the classroom. They don't come any better than Lexy.

 

Defensive POY - Jr. Kathryn "Kat" Schreiber - Over the course of the season she emerged as one of the best defensive centerfielders in NKY, possessing a very strong arm and cat-like speed to go get a ball. She also played one game at SS this year and was perfect in 9 chances (3 putouts/6 assist).

 

Offensive POY - Jr. Haley Meyers. Haley led the team in AB's (128), hits (55), RBI (25), OB% (.447), SLG% (.516), & batting average (.430).

 

Team MVP - Jr. Haley Meyers. To go along with the above numbers, in the circle she was 16-15 with 5 shutouts & 3 no-hitters, with 2.17 ERA. In 201 innings she had 201 K's, over 40 more than the next closest NKY pitcher.

 

New Records established

 

At Bats - Haley Meyers (128)

Hits - Haley Meyers (55)

Assist 1st Base - Kennedy Bin (18)

Putouts 2nd Base - Jenna Fryer (67)

 

Fr. Jenna Fryer's 63 assist came within 2 assist of tying Jessica Wimsatt's record of 65 assist by a 2nd baseman set in 2007. The 1st time 2nd baseman had 140 total chances with only 10 errors for a .929 FLD% :ylsuper:

Is softball a summer sport ? I thought it was a spring sport?

Why the late banquet ? Shoutout to the winner of the thoroughbred award. I happen to have one of those.
