I only tip people who's pay is dependent on tips which is mostly waitress/bar type people. If I ask someone to do something they normally wouldn't do or they do something I wouldn't expect, I'll throw something in. But I wouldn't run out and tip my garbage man every week for picking up my garbage or tip the crew that cuts my grass every week. Carpet cleaning would fall into same category. I would, however, ask them if they needed some water and get them something at Christmas time.

I tip everybody. Ushers at Reds games, bartenders at weddings who remember what I'm drinking and always see me coming, hotel courtesy van drivers. I leave tips for the maids when I check out of hotels. Anybody who does me a service that I appreciate will get rewarded every time. Especially if you are young and hustling.

I tip the bartenders, ushers and maids also. I guess I am a selective tipper because I don't tip every serviceman. I don't tip the guy at Jiffy lube, my mailman, garbage man, broker, etc.

 

And I always find it a dilemma when an owner of the restaurant waits on me. His pay doesn't depend on a tip from me but I always tip good service. So I always tip but wonder if I should tip them like I would the struggling mom, college student.

I give my mailman and garbage man a Christmas present every year. Usually a gift card or cash and some cookies.
