There's nothing you really have to do. Just make sure the device is plugged in and fully charged, start the upgrade and let it finish. Takes about 5 minutes at most. If you have one of the earlier Ipad's and limited memory (16gb or less), you may not want to upgrade all the way up to the newest IOS version, as it takes up a pretty big chunk of memory. If you're really worried about it, I think an Apple store will do it for you.
