Former Newport Central Catholic player profiles

Seems like she was a great team player. It is always good to have a player that will play wherever the coach needs her, and will do whatever it takes to help out the team.

We tell every girl that plays, the more positions you can play the better your chance of always being in the starting line-up.

Kristen Schreiber (Class of 2015)

kristen.jpg

One of the best catchers ever in NKY fastpitch, Kristen was a tireless worker on and off the field. I haven’t seen ANY catchers who could almost beat the runner to 1st base backing up the play like her. Also, she possessed one of the strongest arms in NKY with pop times averaging 1.75 and for her career threw out 42 of 91 (46%) base stealers. The 4-year varsity starter could also swing a big stick.

As a freshman she only hit .257, but led the team in triples (5), however behind the plate she threw out 16 of 29 (55%).

As a sophomore she threw out 12 of 26 runners, and at the plate hit .315 and led the team in doubles (7), HR (5), Walks (13).

As a junior she threw out 9 of 21 and at the plate hit .395 and led the team in SLG% (.651), doubles (17), runs scored (32), RBI (20), Hits (32), & Walks (15).

As a senior only 15 attempted to run on her, with 5 not making it, but at the plate she hit .337, and led the team in RBI (28), HR (6), OB% (.456), & Walks (17).

She finished her HS career with a .320 batting average and a .567 SLG%. She was 2013 36th District MVP, 2014 NKSCA 1st Team & Cincinnati Enquirer 2nd Team, 2015 NKSCA 1st Team & Cincinnati Enquirer 1st Team, & 2-time Team MVP. She earned a Scholarship to play at Mt. St. Joe’s, and recently had to give up playing due to a back injury.

Casey Kohls (Class of 2015)

casey.jpg

The most coachable kid a coach could ever have is one way to describe Casey. She ALWAYS had a smile on her face and was one of the smartest players to wear a NewCath uniform, she was also smart in the classroom (NHS president). This young lady was a varsity starter as a 6th, 7th, & 8th grader at Dayton HS before being a 4-year varsity starter up on the “hill”, where she played 111 of 121 career games at 2nd base.

In the field as a freshman in 118 total chances (67 PO, 45 AST, & 6 ERR) she finished with a .947 FLD%. (1 game....1 putout 5 assist at 3rd base). At the plate she led the team in hits (46), 2B (7), SB (15), sac-bunts (5), OB% (.496), SLG% (.533), & batting average (.371).

As a sophomore she played all 32 games at 2nd, and in 109 chances (58 PO, 44 AST, 7 ERR) finished with a .936 FLD%. At the plate she led the team in hits (39), runs (33), sac-bunts (3), OB% (.459), & batting average (.398). Her .581 SLG% was good enough for 2nd best. She was named to the Cincinnati Enquirer 1st Team, 9th Region All-Tourney Team, & NKSCA 1st Team.

As a junior she had the worst year of her career, but her attitude was always a positive one. She had a .911 FLD% (34 PO, 38 AST, 7 ERR), but 9 games were at SS (9-14-4) & one at 2nd (1-2-0). She led the team only in stolen bases with 10 and only hit .271. She still was named to the NKSCA 2nd Team.

As a senior she bounced back. In the field playing all 31 games at 2nd she finished with a .938 FLD% (62 PO, 44 AST, 7 ERR). She led the team in only sac-bunts (5), but hit .376, with a .426 OB% and a .581 SLG%. She was again named to the 9th Region All-Tourney Team and was NKSCA 2nd Team.

Records

Hits (Career) – 146

Runs (Career) – 123

Assist (Career) – 171

Assist 2nd Base (Career) – 150

Putouts 2nd Base (Career) – 148

She ranks in the Top 10 in EVERY offensive category (Season & Career).

I would take 9 of her against the best team, and I would like my chances.

Michaela Ware (Class of 2015)

mic.jpg

One of the most talented 3 sport athletes to go up on the “hill”, Michaela was a 4 year varsity starter in basketball, soccer, & softball. In basketball & soccer she garnered many Regional & State accolades, and if she had time to concentrate solely on softball there’s no telling how much better she could have been.

As a freshman she hit .371, with an .456 OB%, and playing SS in all 32 games she had an .848 FLD% with 42 putouts and an amazing 64 assist.

As a sophomore she led the team in AB’s (106), runs (33), & SB (10), and hit .349. in 29 games at SS, she had a .756 FLD% with 31 putouts and 37 assist.

As a junior she she was hampered by injuries and only hit in 18 games, but still led the team in hitting at .484 and OB% (.535), she she was also 2nd in SLG% at .594. In only 16 games in the field she had an overall .850 FLD% with 12 putouts and 22 assist. She played 5 games at 3rd that season (5 PO-6 AST-1 ERR).

As a senior she bounced back to play in 30 of 31 games and led the team in AB’s (97), runs (35), & SB (19). She finished hitting .340. In the field at SS she had a .899 FLD% with 18 putouts and 44 assist.

She ended her career hitting .373 to go along with a .428 OB%. You can find Michaela now on the basketball court for Thomas More College, as she was one of 4 former NewCath hoopsters to play and win the NCAA Division III national title this past season.

Haley Meyers (Class of 2017)

HALEY PIT.jpg

I've had the pleasure of coaching this young lady since she was in kindergarten, and back then I know she was going to be something special. She was always bigger than any girl in her class and that size translated into the ability to excel at athletics over her peers. She was one of the 4 graduating seniors this year to be members of the 1st ever NewCath Freshman team as 6th graders back in 2011. Due to her ability to pitch she was moved up to varsity as an 8th grader (the 1st since Courtney Sandfoss in 2006) and she never looked back.

As an 8th grader she went 4-2 with 35K's in 33 innings.....including the 1st of a career best 16 No-Hitters.

In her Frosh campaign she went 17-9 in 145 innings with 169K's and a 2.26 ERA with 5 No-Hitters and at the plate hit .254.

In her sophomore season she went 17-11 in 163 innings with 158K's and a 1.84 ERA including 5 more No-No's, 3 one-hitters and 4 two-hitters. However, at the plate she shined, as she lead the team in Hits (39), 2B (11), 3B (7), SLG% (.778), and AVG (.433).

As a junior she went 16-15 in 201 innings with 201 K's (tops in NKY), and a 2.19 ERA. At the plate she lead the team in AB's (128), Hits (55), RBI (25), OBP% (.447), SLG% (.516), and AVG (.430).

As a senior she went 19-9 in 175 innings with 166K's and a 2.71 ERA. She lead the team in Homeruns (6), Walks (14), and SLG% (.711).

She is one of the best to ever put on a Breds uniform.
