Randy Parker Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 (edited) Well, the regular season is over, which makes me sad. But this is our last set of rankings for the year, which makes me want to sneak Papa out of the Nursing Home so that we can go toilet paper Can'tcoach's house in celebration. #1 - Campbell County (17-12) Four Camels reached double figures in Tuesday's home 66-42 triumph over Boone County. Trent McGovney was the high man with 15 points, Garren Bertsch added 13, Cole Hegyi 12, and Matt Wilson contributed 11 points and 13 rebounds. The Camels did themselves one better on Friday night, placing five players in double figures in a 70-59 win over visiting Ryle. Wilson's 17 points and 11 rebounds led the way, but Bertsch added 13, Hegyi 12, and McGovney and Tanner Clos 10. #2 - Paris (21-5) The Greyhounds fell behind Pendleton County on Thursday night 20-11 after 1 quarter, but outscored the Wildcats in each of the following 3 quarters. But that wasn't enough as Paris lost a senior night shocker 56-54. Koebe Garrard scored a team-high 25 points in the loss. The Hounds closed out their regular season on Saturday with a 77-35 road walloping of Berea. A dozen Paris players scored, with Tayjin Cunningham scoring 12 and Garrard 11 in the victory. #3 - Augusta (20-6) Brian Kirk's Panthers notched two more wins in the regular season's final week to finish the year winners of 7 straight. First up came a hard-fought 81-74 win over visiting Lewis County on Tuesday. Camryn Snapp led the victors with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Owens Crawford and Connor Maddox both tallied 18 points, and Tanner Pugh chipped in with 10. Augusta then overcame a 24-15 halftime deficit on Wednesday at Newport to win 61-58. Maddox poured in 29 points, while Snapp earned another double-double of 13 points and 12 boards. Crawford tallied 10 points in the win. #4 - Montgomery County (19-10) Art Walker scored 22 points in Montgomery's 82-53 blitzing at Nicholas County on Wednesday. Jerryd Jones tossed in 12 points and freshman Brennan Canada finished with 10. Matt Daniel's squad finished out the regular season victorious on the road, upending Harrison County on Friday 78-61. Walker led the way with 20, Canada had 15, Cody Parsley 11, and Fuller 10. #5 - Bishop Brossart (19-7) The Mustangs won 2 home games early in the week to finish at 19-7 for the regular season. Mike Code's club beat Lloyd 66-51 on Monday behind 23 points and 11 boards from big man Jackson Crawford. Joey Hickman added 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Jacob Zai contributed 17 points. The next night Brossart turned a 22-21 halftime lead into a convincing 72-56 win over Mason County. Crawford again shined with 31 points, and both Hickman and Logan Schultz scored 13. #6 - Mason County (19-9) The Royals trailed by a just a point at halftime of Tuesday's road game with Bishop Brossart, but the team was outscored 50-35 in the 2nd half in a 72-56 loss. Isiah Garrison led Mason County with 18 points. Buddy Biggs' club then pounded rival Fleming County 85-53 in Maysville on Thursday. Darren Williams scored a career-high 21 points, while freshman Jaylen Lofton had a fine evening with 19. Sweeney added 15 for the Royals, who utilized a 23-3 3rd quarter run to pull away from the Panthers. Then on Friday, pupil got the best of teacher as Keaton Belcher's Pendleton County Wildcats outscored the Royals 50-23 in the 2nd half to win 77-60. Garrison had 14 to lead Mason County in defeat. #7 - Scott (12-15) Brad Carr's Eagles turned back Ludlow 56-37 at home on Tuesday, with senior forward C.J. Seay earning a double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds. Jake Ohmer led Scott in scoring with 15 points. Ohmer scored 24 points on Friday night, but Scott was nipped at Cooper 54-52 in the final game of the regular season. #8 - Pendleton County (14-16) It was a wild week for Keaton Belcher's club, who lost 55-47 at home to Bourbon County on Tuesday. Dontaie Allen (27) and Mason Dennie (16) scored all but 4 of the team's points. But the Cats came back to score an impressive 56-54 win at Paris on Thursday, with Allen turning in a monster performance of 32 points, 18 rebounds, and 5 blocks. The next night, the Cats finished the regular season by overcoming a 10-point halftime deficit to win convincingly at Mason County 77-60. Allen's 22 points led Pendleton and Grant Walsh had a nice night with 18. #9 - George Rogers Clark (15-14) James Cornelius had 21 points and 12 rebounds, and Jyles Anderson scored a team-high 25 points in the Cardinals 79-70 home win over Tates Creek on Tuesday. Jordan Menchen added 13 points and Ryan Cooper 12 in the win. In the team's final regular season game, GRC fell behind 25-13 after 1 quarter of action on Thursday at powerful Henry Clay. The Cards fought hard, but came up short in a 66-59 loss. Cornelius topped the team with 16 points. #10 - Bourbon County (8-20) The Colonels enter the post-season on a 3-game winning streak, with 2 of those wins coming last week. Bourbon earned a 55-47 road win at Pendleton County on Tuesday, with Titus Ransom and Billy Orcutt both scoring 14 points. Twenty-four hours later, Nick Sosby's bunch ran past Bracken County 78-56 at home, with Orcutt's 18 points a team-high. Ransom scored 17, Chandler Thomas 14, and Ameryon Blackburn 13 for the Colonels. #11 - Bracken County (15-11) The Polar Bears put 11 players in the scoring column in Tuesday's 73-37 road win against Robertson County. Cooper Engnes and Brady Jones both scored 14, Austin Crawford 11, and Jarred Lippert 10. In another road game the next night, however, Bracken fell 78-56 to Bourbon County, with Crawford's 24 points and 10 rebounds leading in defeat. #12 - Harrison County (11-16) Zack Pullilam tallied 25 points and Jovon Williams scored 18 as the Thorobreds snapped a 5-game losing streak in Tuesday's 58-55 road win against Franklin County. But the Breds were not able to get another win against Montgomery County on Friday, as the visiting Indians prevailed 78-61. Keishon Gilkey scored 13 points and Leon Commodore 11 in the loss. #13 - St. Patrick (14-14) The Saints went on a 24-3 2nd quarter run in a 65-41 home win over Silver Grove on Wednesday. Jakaar Frey led the winners with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Josh Walton scored 11 and Brennan Bauer 10. St. Pat completed its regular season with a 66-33 win over visiting Menifee County on Saturday. Frey led again with 16 points and 13 rebounds, and Ben Swolsky chipped in with 15 points. #14 - Nicholas County (8-19) The Bluejackets lost a pair of lopsided road games to conclude the regular season, starting with 82-53 loss to Montgomery County, in which Elijah Barnett scored 17 points and Logan Stafford 13. Danville upended Nicholas on Thursday by a score of 89-55, with Barnett again leading the team with 17 points. #15 - Calvary Christian (15-14) Ryan Neisis' Cougars dropped a 74-56 contest at Ludlow on Monday night, despite getting 27 points from Aikeem Riley and 20 from Justin Wade. The duo was even better the next night, with Riley pouring in 37 points and Wade 34, but Calvary lost a high-scoring 99-94 game at home to Eminence. The Cougars then wrapped up their regular season a game over .500 by scoring two home wins on Saturday: 79-52 over Latin and 75-61 over Evangel Christian. #16 - Robertson County (8-18) The Black Devils final home game of the season was Tuesday night's 73-37 loss to Bracken County. Mason Burden scored 14 points and Dakota Moore added 10 in defeat. John Brown's kids then went 1-1 over the weekend, losing 69-54 at Dayton on Friday. Burden had a dominating performance in defeat, scoring 28 points and gathering 17 rebounds. The Black Devils ended the regular season on a high note in an 82-74 overtime win at home versus Rose Hill. Burden amazingly eclipsed his Friday performance by totaling 44 points and 20 rebounds, while Moore tallied 27 points. #17 - Silver Grove (17-7) The Big Trains led St. Patrick 12-11 in the early-going of Wednesday's road game with St. Patrick, but the Saints rattled off a 24-3 run en route to a 65-41 defeat of Howard Brownstein's squad. Senior guard Randy Kuntz was the only double-digit scorer with 17 points. 37th District Tournament Preview: Campbell County Middle School is again the host for one of the 10th Region's toughest District Tournaments. There was a three-way tie for the #1 seed, and a recent blind draw awarded the coveted top spot to the two-time defending 10th Region champion Campbell County Camels. Aric Russell's club will face the Calvary Christian/Silver Grove winner in one semi-final contest, while Bishop Brossart and Scott will battle in the other semi-final match--a rematch of a February 12th game that the Eagles won in Taylor Mill 61-60 in overtime. The 37th features three of the Region's top performers in Campbell County senior big man Matt Wilson, Brossart's versatile senior forward Jackson Crawford, and Scott's superb junior guard Jake Ohmer. And as is often the case with the 37th, this tourney will lead to one very good team watching the 10th Region Tournament from the sidelines. Calvary Christian vs. Silver Grove - Feb. 22nd at 7:30 pm Calvary/Silver Grove winner vs. Campbell County - Feb. 24th at 6:00 pm Scott vs. Bishop Brossart - Feb. 24th at 7:30 pm Championship - Feb. 26th at 7:00 pm 38th District Tournament Preview: Pendleton County and Harrison County once again managed to avoid drawing each other in the opening round of the District Tournament. The defending District champ Wildcats will face host Nicholas County, while Larry Kendall's Thorobreds will square off with John Brown's young Robertson County team. None of the 38th's teams finished the regular season with a .500 or better record, but Pendleton has won 4 of 6, including road wins against Campbell County, Paris, and Mason County. Freshman Dontaie Allen of Pendleton County is the 38th's top individual player, averaging over 22 ppg and almost 10 rpg. Robertson County sophomore forward Mason Burden is the District's top overall scorer at 23.5 ppg, and the youngster is fresh off a 44 points and 20 rebounds performance in the regular season finale. Harrison County vs. Robertson County - Feb. 22nd at 8:00 pm Pendleton County vs. Nicholas County - Feb. 23rd at 8:00 pm Championship - Feb. 26th at 7:00 pm 39th District Tournament Preview: The last time Bracken County hosted the 39th, we saw one of the most memorable games in recent 10th Region history. The 2016 tourney is back in Brooksville, and the field certainly seems set up for highly competitive basketball. Mason County and first-year coach Buddy Biggs are the defending champs, but to even get to the finals, the Royals will have to get past the host Bracken County Polar Bears and their first-year coach Jason Hinson. Augusta and its first-year coach Brian Kirk will battle Matthew Taylor's St. Patrick squad for a fourth time this season. The 39th, like much of the 10th, is very much guard heavy. Bracken County junior Austin Crawford is the Region's top scorer at 26.9 ppg, but the outstanding guard also averages 10.2 rpg. Mason County senior guard Pig Williams is the primary returnee from last year's championship team and has enjoyed a tremendous senior campaign. Augusta senior Connor Maddox has led the Panthers to a 20-6 record while averaging 22.2 ppg. Flying under the radar in the 39th (and the 10th) is a post-player: St. Patrick senior Jakaar Frey (15.2 ppg and 11.6 rpg). St. Patrick vs. Augusta - Feb. 22nd at 8:00 pm Mason County vs. Bracken County - Feb. 23rd at 8:00 pm Championship - Feb. 25th at 8:00 pm 40th District Tournament Preview: The District that provided the most surprises in 2014-15 could very well be poised for more of the unexpected in 2015-16. George Rogers Clark hosts this year's tournament, which sees defending champion Paris as the top overall seed. Terence Brooks' Greyhounds amassed more wins (21) and fewer losses (5) than any other 10th Region team during the regular season, and the Hounds possess arguably the Region's most talent from top to bottom. Paris will do battle with county rival Bourbon County, the #4 seed, in the opening round. Nick Sosby's Colonels have played a grueling schedule, but the squad has won 3 straight and 4 of their last 5. One of the 10th's most heated rivalries, Montgomery County and George Rogers Clark, will provide the other semi-final round contest. Matt Daniel's Indians beat Scott Humphrey's Cardinals in both regular season matchups--by 12 in Mt. Sterling and by 15 in Winchester--but any time these two get together, it seems like anything is possible. Paris senior forward Koebe Garrard is the standout talent on a loaded Greyhounds club. Senior point guard Caswell Fuller is the straw that stirs the Montgomery County drink, but his back court savvy is supplemented by senior sharpshooter Art Walker and athletic junior forward Jerryd Jones. Seniors James Cornelius and Jyles Anderson form somewhat of a two-headed monster for GRC, while Bourbon County junior guard Ameryon Blackburn is one of the 10th's most underrated players.
