The 57th District Tournament meeting was today and here is how the coin flip went for the #1 seed.

Johnson Central won the flip to call the flip then won the flip therefore:

Johnson Central (1 seed) vs. Sheldon Clark (4 seed) - Tuesday 7:00 PM @ Paintsville

Magoffin County (2 seed) vs. Paintsville (3 seed) - Wednesday 7:00 PM @ Paintsville

Boys' Championship Friday 7:00 PM

Johnson Central defeated Sheldon Clark twice this season (14 point win at home: 1 point win in OT on the road)

Magoffin defeated Paintsville by 20+ both meetings with the most recent meeting seeing Magoffin standout Trenton Russell scoring 45 points.

Let me just say that I HATE coin flips and draws in the district tournament.

That being said, I'll take JC and Magoffin County.

I too dislike blind draws and coin flips. The 57th District seeds and per KHSAA rules you must have two tie breaker scenarios for seeded districts. The 57th uses head to head wins as tie breaker #1 and coin flip as tie breaker #2. Since Magoffin and JC both finished 5-1 in 57th district action and split with each other, a coin flip determined the #1 seed. Sheldon Clark and Paintsville were locked into the #4 and #3 seeds respectively based on regular season district action.

A flip to determine the flip?

JC won the flip but didn't get an advantage imo.

Sheldon Clark is better then Paintsville.

Yes. Going by alphabetical order of the schools involved in the tie, the district tournament director will assign "heads" to the first school in alphabetical order and "tails" to the second school. The tournament director will then flip the coin to determine which school gets to make the call for the flip that counts.

This is what has been put in writing for the 57th as discussed and voted on by Athletic Directors and Coaches of each participating school within the district. This was put in place in order to avoid any potential bias as to who gets to make the call.

Completely agree. Paintsville did defeat Sheldon Clark twice during the regular season, but SC played JC and Magoffin very tough both times they met each team. Seeing as both Magoffin and JC easily defeated Paintsville both times, the winner of this flip really did get the worst draw.

I will take Johnson Central in a close one over Sheldon Clark. Although the cardinals have been the one team that has given the golden eagles the most trouble in the past 3-4 years in the district tournament. Sheldon Clark will play with a "nothing to loose" attitude, while Johnson Central will have the "bulls eye" on their chest. Mason Blair will need a Big night.

I will take Magoffin Co. over Paintsville. Although the tourney is at Paintsville, the tigers just don't have the fire power to keep up with Russell & Lovely. Magoffin has played well the last month and are one of three teams (Lawrence Co, Johnson Central) I feel can win the region.

I will take Johnson Central over Magoffin Co in the finals. Without a big man for the hornets in the post JC will pound it down low and control the boards.

Only my thoughts!
