Mt. Union 49 St. Thomas 35 (D3 National Championship)

Featured Replies

49-35

Congrats to the Purple Raiders who win their second national title in the last 4 years. At one point they were down by 14 in the first half. Mt. Union was led be Senior RB Logan Nemeth who rushed for 2 TDS, 220 yds on 30 carries.

Mt. Union capitlized on a St. Thomas turnover to take the lead.

Purple Raiders reign again - D3football

Wabash who beat Thomas Moore by a TD in overtime, lost to St. Thomas 38-7 in the quarterfinals. St. Thomas went on to beat Linfield in the semis 38-17.

Mt. Union beat nemesis Wis-Whitewater 36-6 in the semis and beat Wesley 56-35 in the quarterfinals.

The degrees of separation between the top 4, to 8, to 16 were substantial this year in Div3!

could a mod correct the score...I fat fingered the St.Thomas score which should be 35, not 25. Thanks in advance.

It has always been. Some schools have 900 students and some have 7,000. It is a huge enrollment gap. Mt. Union is in such a sweet spot to draw talent, they may never drop out of the Top 5. A recruiting base is of the upmost importance in D3, more so than any other level.

You may make me look this up but my hunch is enrollment has nothing to do with it from a numbers perspective. A winning tradition and good networks of recruiting that support said success are more viable.

Yep...I looked UW-Whitewater 10,000+...Mt.Union 2000+! Way to go Mt. Union :bunny:

Surprised Div3 enables UW-Whitewater to play! They should be Div 2 if not FCS. They'd still be a top div2 with enrollment...

At the D3 level, to get the talent to compete with Mt. Union year in and year out, you HAVE to be either, A. the only local show, or B. In an area that is streaming with talent. It is difficult to get a kid to go over 400 miles to pay to play basically.

For points of reference, Alliance, OH is 87 miles from Pittsburgh, 146 miles from Columbus, and 72 miles from Cleveland. Add to that golden triangle, the name recognition now and the fact that they get actual talent from Florida, Chicago, and other places and you have the ideal situation.

Wisconsin Whitewater is 53 miles west of Milwaukee, 45 from Madison, and 106 from Chicago.

Franklin has become a power recently. They are 25 miles from Indianapolis and basically the only show in town. Anderson is not a threat, and Greencastle (Depaw) is 69 miles west. Franklin's conference is local and they go to the playoffs every year. They have the market cornered pretty nicely.

$$$ Check out the money....call it a hunch Mt. Unions cost will be less than the majority within the 400 mile circle you mentioned earlier.

And then there is the "financial package" provided based on NEED! So Franklin families are doing well in this economy and pay the majority of tuition to allow their kids to "pay to play?" Don't answer that :lol2:

I'm beginning to think and have thought coaching staffs and established recruiting networks win more...and good "financial aid packages" especially if you run sub 4.75 :jump: wins...

We've had this conversation before....Franklin, Wittenberg, Thomas Moore, Wabash, Mt. Union bring kids to their program based on winning conference championships!

Back to my original message...the degrees of separation are enlightening within the top 20 in Div3 !
