theguru Posted November 14, 2015 Posted November 14, 2015 I watched Silenced last night on Netflix. Very engaging documentary about three different federal whistleblowers that our government took aim at. Anyone see it? Thoughts?
LIPTON BASH Posted November 14, 2015 Posted November 14, 2015 I watched Silenced last night on Netflix. Very engaging documentary about three different federal whistleblowers that our government took aim at. Anyone see it? Thoughts? I have not . Which whistle blowers ? What era?
theguru Posted November 14, 2015 Author Posted November 14, 2015 I have not . Which whistle blowers ? What era? Post 9-11, these are all very recent cases. In short, all the three stories are the same, according to the Whistleblowers the Federal Government threw the Constitution out of the window after 9-11 and these three people all blew the whistle on illegal acts by the government and as we all may suspect the Federal Government wasn't happy about it.
Clyde Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 Well that was damn depressing on many levels. I'll need to think more about the CIA guy and his case but Drake's is really bad. ThinThread, according to him, MAY have helped stop 9.11 . Plus you have the personal cost to him in both dollars as well as marriage and strain. Not to mention what the stress has done to his health. He had a great comment about the "trend line" we are now on regarding the usurping of our privacy rights by the govt vs what the Constitution allows. I know it's uncool to question "national security" vs "privacy rights" but what we now have is the govt defaulting to "national security reasons" for all operations/activities they are involved in. Question it and they'll make an example out of you by ruining your life. God Bless America!
Clyde Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 I have not . Which whistle blowers ? What era? Thomas Drake is the most well known of the three mentioned.

We call it National Security vs. Privacy Rights but really if we would deal with all the threats in the world we wouldn't have to resort to such invasions of privacy. Not to make it too political but I think this kind of thing is mostly the result of failed foreign policy and a weak America that has little stomach for the horrors of war. In other words, we either kill a lot of people or keep tabs on everyone and kill just a few less people.

It's about individuals who get caught making mistakes abusing their power. THE WORST!

Clyde Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 The Whistleblowers? Our Government? Both? No issue whistleblowers as long as they did not endanger any individuals. That's why I said I need to think more about the CIA guy. My issue is with people in the govt trying to keep doing illegal activities/violating rights by destroying those like these three who would say "hey, that's not right and we're better than this." Even though the charges were dropped against Drake the govt won. Why? They destroyed a person. Others will think twice before exposing lies and illegalities.
theguru Posted November 18, 2015 Author Posted November 18, 2015 ^ So scary, I wouldn't definitely advise a friend to shut up and play ball. Individuals are in over their head against the Government unless they are ultra wealthy. And even then, probably still so.

Just let someone watch that dad telling his kids goodbye and they'll reconsider their desire to do "what is right."
theguru Posted November 18, 2015 Author Posted November 18, 2015 Just let someone watch that dad telling his kids goodbye and they'll reconsider their desire to do "what is right." Something like 30 months in the Fed Pen teaching other inmates to pass their GED or something like that.
