Bardstown became the first 1A school to three-peat as boys champions since Bellevue (1991-93). Bardstown beat Fort Campbell 92-72, with Bishop Brossart (62.5) third and Trigg County (53) fourth.

 

Bardstown's depth proved to be too much for the 1A field, with only two Bardstown athletes taking first place (pole vault and shot put).

 

Individual standouts included three juniors -- Bethlehem's Billy Jackson (first place in both hurdle events), Harrodsburg's Chrys Jones (long jump winner and state record in the triple jump), and Fort Campbell's Derrick Stallworth (state winner in the 100m and 200m, including a new state record in the 200m).

 

For the gals, St. Henry (125) coasted past Danville (73), Bishop Brossart (69), and Model (61.3) to become the first girls 1A team to three-peat since Brossart won six straight from 1997-2002.

 

Individual winners for St. Henry included Bri Hasbrouck (400m), Jenna Siemer (1600m), Karen Lageman (3200m), Caitlyn Schilling (100m hurdles), and Kacie Gamm (300m hurdles) as well as their 3200m relay team.

 

Fulton County sophomore Sharika Smith won the 200m, triple jump, and long jump. She would have likely won the 100m dash but was disqualified in the preliminaries.

Brossart's Troy Cooper won the "A" shotput with a throw of 57' 2", which was also the longest toss of the meet in any class!! Congrats to Bardstown and St. Henry on their overall titles.

By far the best race of the day was the 400 meter sprint. I predicted that this would be a very good race between Kwasi Obeng of Bardstown and E.J. Fields of Frankfort. It came right down to the wire with Kwasi leading and E.J. catching him and beating him in a photo finish the last 100 meters. What a great race.

The lead seemed to change 3 times within the last 100 meters. The 800 meter relay had a great finish as well.

For those of you that have never met Kwasi Obeng, he transferred here from South Africa in about the 5th grade, and is one of the finest young men I've had the pleasure of knowing. And boy is he fast!

Bardstown's fan section was directly in front of where I was sitting. They had terrific fan support. Parents and fans were very vocal, supportive and classy. Congratulations to the Bardstown Boys team!

My goof. Bardstown's other win came in the discus, not the shot
