Team A blocks a FG attempt by Team B

 

#13 for Team A indirectly falls into kicker during block attempt.

 

Can you call roughing the kicker on this play? Does either of the following scenarios affect the ruling?

 

Scenario 1: #13 got a hand on the ball before hitting the kicker

Scenario 2: #13 never touched the ball, but his teammate #40 blocked the kick

Anyone?

I thinks as long as it is blocked before hitting the kicker in both of those there isn't a penalty for roughing or running into the kicker.

If team A contacts the ball before the kicker, there's no roughing. Commander has it right.

This issue came up in Belfry/NCC game last night. Belfry blocked a XP attempt and they were called for roughing on the play.

 

I thought that it was a bogus call because of my misunderstanding of the rule. What happened was two guys crashed from the outside, and the kick was blocked by one of the linemen front and center. One of the outside quick guys fell into the kicker but honestly I couldn't say which came first, the block or the contact. It would have to have been very close.

 

If that is the way the rule reads, then I'll give the ref the benefit of the doubt on that judgment call.

The 2nd defender is not protected just because the first defender blocked the kick.

 

You can still have roughing on Watusi's scenario and the play he described in last night's game. Only the person touching the ball is protected and he can STILL be called for roughing if he had time to avoid the contact.

Got a question you said it was blocked by linemen front and center where did he come from? If he came over the snapper or lined head up with snapper the call is roughing the kicker which confuses everyone when it's called. Just asking if that might have happened?

He was middle of the line, across from the center. He didn't come through the line, he jumped and got a hand up high. The penetration came from the edge by two other guys, one of which made the contact.

under the rules you cannot line head up on snapper because the snapper/center is protected generally because his head is between his knees. Point of emphasis for head neck injury. Call is roughing the the snapper but single is roughing kicker with 15 yard penalty. Not sure if that is this case or not would need to see it.

Nobody was lined up head up on the center, I didn't realize this is what you were asking. Prior to the snap, this kid was in a OLB position. At the snap, he came down the line and timed his jump. A different kid ran into the kicker, not this kid who made the block.

Ok gotcha. Just seen that called on blocks before and it confuses people sometimes especially when kicker isn't even hit.
