Class 5A Notebook (9-7): The Sky is Falling, the Sky is Falling

Featured Replies

The sky is falling, the sky is falling, the sky is falling. Pre-season number one, and perieneral power, Highlands is 1-2 beating a winless team to get in the winners column. District foe, Covington Catholic is 0-3 and will likely be below .500 on the season. While Bowling Green, recently holding the longest current winning streak in the state and winning multiple State Championships, lost again. Add to those teams, the defending Class 5A State Champion - Pulaski County losing to Scott County. Who is going to be the number one team in this class? Is there going to be a definite number one? How many of you are thinking “What about Owensboro”? Well their three opponents are a combined 1-8, how does anyone know how good they are?

Bowling Green has done the unbelievable over the past four seasons, they have won multiple State Championships and beat St. Xavier multiple times. This year, St. Xavier got some pay back and handed the Purples their first loss of 2015. How big of a loss is that for Bowling Green? Does that loss mean the Purples are not the best team in Class 5A? Or, does it mean there is a big difference between the top of Class 5A and the top of Class 6A?

Pulaski County has lost to a solid Scott County team and beaten everyone else they have played. Many will want to play the “Compare Scores” game with Highlands since both teams have played Scott County, but be sure to look close at what team scored on the Scott County starters and when the scores changed.

Owensboro is undefeated, albeit against what appears to be inferior competition for a top tier team. We will learn a lot about Owensboro and Bowling Green this week as the two face off. Who gets exposed? Who proves they belong at the top?

Highlands’ win and losses does not look good on paper, they have lost to two ranked Class 6A teams, remember there may be a big difference between the top of Class 5A and Class 6A this year. All Highlands has to do is worry about the district games. Will they still come out of the district looking like Highlands? Or, is 2015 just not the year of the Bluebird?

Anderson County is another team that is undefeated (3-0), but like Owensboro, those wins are less then impressive with their opponents bringing a record of 1-6 combined to the argument. The Bearcats square off agains a tough Boyle County team this week, this may be the signature win Anderson County is looking for.

Southwestern plays a winless Mercer County this week. It may be another week, when they play Corbin, before we see much improvement from the Warriors. Will Southwestern bounce back from the early disappointment against Bourbon County? Do you think Pulaski County has their meeting with Southwestern circled on the calendar this year?

North Laurel is a third undefeated team with wins over less then impressive opponents, their opponents are 0-9, and they take on yet another winless team this week in Mason County. North Laurel may very well end up undefeated for the season, but what will that tell us?

It has been said before, and it will be said again, “Don’t fall asleep on Fern Creek”. The Tigers continue their schedule against the Louisville Class 6A teams this week and they are doing well in that endeavor, only losing to highly ranked Manual by 10 points. Fern Creek will not be undefeated this season, but their schedule is preparing them for the playoffs.

Christian County got back on their winning ways last week after taking a loss at the hands of Bowling Green. The Colonels will win more games this year. Are they going to be improved enough for the playoffs?

Keeping with the theme, Bullitt Central is, yet another undefeated team, their opponents are a combined 0-8 on the season. It will be another week before they play a team with a winning record. Will we learn more about them then? Are they a contender in the Top 10 of Class 5A?

Awesome analysis!!!

5A will end up being the most fun this year. By November, there will be 4 or 5 teams, if not more, that have a legit shot to win it!

I agree. There are five teams that could win it all, but I don't think their is much difference in those teams. It may very well come down to who's schedule better prepares them for the playoffs. And, if CovCath survives their schedule, they will be the best prepared.
