Class 3A Football Analysis for (8/30)

Featured Replies

Delayed Gratification

Two weeks into the season and it already seems like three teams in Class 3A are beginning to put some space between themselves and the rest of the field. #1 Belfry, who sat out opening weekend, kicked off their season with a high-scoring victory, 55-38, over Tates Creek in the Pike County Bowl. While not a vintage Pond Creek performance, especially on the defensive side, the Pirates were able to take care of a much larger opponent.

With a Rebel Yell

The most impressive performance in 3A this weekend likely came from #3 Boyle County who absolutely dismantled #8 Bell County by a score of 41-7. Quarterback Josiah Robbins passed for 281 yards and the Rebel defense held Bell to 253 total yards. While many may consider this game the impetus to boost Boyle to #1 in the state, next week's matchup with resurgent crosstown rival Danville should give us a true determining factor on the ability of this Boyle team.

Top Five Dive

Three of last week's top five lost games this weekend and all three losses can be interpreted in completely different ways. First, #2 Lexington Catholic lost at home to Ryle, 31-24. The Knights were likely favored in that game but Ryle has a strong team and could well be among the top ten in 6A. Second, #4 Paducah Tilghman was ran over by a Central Hardin club that was smarting after a close loss to Boyle County in Week Zero. Questions have abounded all offseason as to whether Tilghman has the size to compete with the best in the class. A 23 point home loss certainly did nothing to ease those doubts. Finally, #5 Central blew a 24-7 to Knox Central in the Cumberland Falls Pigskin Classic, watching what appeared to be a nice bounce-back win after a tough loss to Manual turn into a concerning loss to a mid-pack 4A squad. Central typically plays their best ball as the season progresses but there are several questions about the Yellowjackets as we move forward.

Notes from Around the Rankings

#6 Russell, playing in their season opener just as Belfry was, struggled until very late to put away county rival Greenup County. An improved Musketeers program gave the Red Devils all they could handle but it wasn't enough as Russell pulled out a 19-13 victory.

#7 Corbin didn't wow anyone with their 28-6 win over Waggener but the Redhounds have won their first two games and seem to be flying a bit under the radar.

#9 Elizabethtown continued its torrid start by winning 53-6 at Marion County. The Panthers are averaging 49.5 points per game and have allowed single touchdowns in both games this season.

Caldwell County, just outside the BGP rankings last week, may have made a move into the Top Ten this week with their annihilation of 4A Franklin-Simpson. In a game most would have considered at best a Pick-Em turned into a Tiger blowout, with Caldwell winning 48-19. Quarterback Shane Burns, replacing Mr. Football Elijah Sindelar, threw for 233 yards and three touchdowns with only three incompletions.

Extra Points

Adair County moved to 2-0 with a 54-6 rout of Caverna.

Hart County pitched their second straight shutout, beating Metcalfe County 21-0.

Fleming County won for the second straight week, knocking off rival Mason County 20-0. This is an impressive start for a program most expected to rebuild this year after graduating a host of seniors.

In the first district football game for anyone in Kentucky this season, Estill County beat Magoffin County 48-8. The Engineers picked up their first win in the post-Trevor Jones era while the Hornets from Salyersville look to be in for a long season after last year's first ever district championship.

Is Boyle County going to be the new #1 ? What do you think, gchs?

Boyle County sure looks good so far very impressed.

I'd say it could go either way. I think either Belfry or Boyle at #1 would be a fair ranking.

I would tend to agree. The season is still very young. The rankings will hash itself out as the season progresses.
