North Laurel volleyball & girls soccer coaches step down

Featured Replies

Brandon Hibbard (NL girls soccer coach & brother of recently resigned SL boys soccer coach Chris Hibbard) has stepped down. He leaves just when the most talented group of seniors the school has seen graduated.

Krenda Anders (NL girls volleyball coach) has stepped down. I expected this to come as her daughter, a volleyball players, graduates this month.

This begs the question as to when the BOE will revisit the pay schedule for the coaches in Laurel County. We cannot keep losing coaches without having a negative impact on the student athletes in Laurel County.

Any word on applicants for the Girls Soccer and Volleyball openings at North Laurel?

Whats happeing to all the South & North Laurel coaches??

See the first post in this thread, third paragraph.

I agree most coaches are underpaid, but are they (Laurel Co.) paid any less than any of the other coaches who coach the "other sports"? At most schools unless you coach football or basketball you are not going to make much. So if anyone is coaching just to make money, they're not going to make much in HS. In fact, for soccer, some of the best qualified coaches are making just as much money, if not more, coaching club "select" soccer. If they get involved with the right club, they will be supported by a highly motivated administrative staff and parents who are all striving to make better players and teams by providing the best training and competition possible. In addition, they will have opportunities to better themselves by receiving additional training and coaching certifications that all lead to better/higher paying coaching positions…if that’s what they desire.

These coaches put in major hours with the kids. Yes I know the non revenue sports aren't going to pay what the revenue sports pay, however, Laurel County is working off the same pay scale for all coaches they have used for 20 years. My point was that this needs to be revisited.

Most of them don't do it just for the money, but I am sure they would like to feel that their time and sacrifice is worth something to the schools. I know for a fact that some of the coaches actually LOSE money by coaching due to the expenses they incur on their own, but have continued to do it for the kids. At some point they have to question what their time is worth and when the BOE says that as a coach, you are worth no more today than you were 20 years ago even though the cost of living is MUCH higher (just look at gas prices alone), then moving on may run thru your mind from time to time.

Yes you are right on the soccer coaches. I know one who used to coach HS and middle school boys and girls soccer at the same time. He made more coaching one select team than he did coaching all 4 of the school teams. That doesn't make it right, but it is a fact.

Good points...there has to be a whole lot of love for the sport and the desire to shape and mold young athletes to be adults one day.

You nailed it! I just think that these folks deserved more than they get for their efforts! I also feel that way about good teachers. They impact lives forever and should be compensated justly! :thumb:

When an assistant football coach at a 2A school would have to take a pay cut of 25-30 percent to take over the head coaching position at a 4A school, it is part of a much larger problem.

And there we have it! :thumb:

I am hearing that both of these slots may have been filled. One story has former NL boys basketball coach Kenny Woods getting the volleyball job. Not sure on the girls soccer opening yet, but was told that they are close to a decision if it hasn't been made already. I have to admit that Mr Coutras hasn't wasted any time in filling these openings or at least searching for replacements.

Why would Woods want it? Does he know anything about volleyball?

I have no idea on his knowledge of the game. However, there have been a few coaches of the sport who never played it in the past. The one who I know did play the game, I think even in played in college, was an assistant and is no longer coaching to spend more time watching her kids play their sports.
