Cincinnati Reds acquire LHP Patrick Schuster

The Cincinnati Reds have acquired left handed pitcher Patrick Schuster from the Arizona Diamondbacks and assigned him to Double-A Pensacola. To make room on the roster the Reds released catcher Lou Marson.

Schuster was originally drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 13th round of the 2009 draft out of high school. That season he grabbed national attention after throwing four consecutive no hitters in his high school season – appearing all over ESPN. He was signed for 3rd-4th round money despite being drafted in the 13th round and was ranked as the Diamondbacks 21st best prospect after the 2009 season.

He joins Matt Buschmann, Joe Paterson and Collin Balester as pitchers that have been added in just the last few days. Paterson has had some MLB success but all of these guys are journeyman minor league fillers except for Schuster who could still have some value given his age and make up as a lefty reliever.

When did the Reds give up?

Oh, about the 2nd week of May.

What did the Reds give up?

I haven't seen anything on that. They gave up a PTBNL for Balester the other day so I'd say it's a similar type of deal.

Found this little scouting report on Schuster from former Padres and Diamondbacks GM Josh Byrnes...

Schuster throws 93 mph with a fastball that moves, and he complements that with a slider and changeup from an arm slot somewhat similar to that of Giants lefty Madison Bumgarner.

He has a deceptive delivery that could make him effective as a left handed specialists in the back of a bullpen.

Since 2013 lefties are hitting .195 against him and righties are hitting .231. He's pitched to a 3.24 era in 25 IP this season at the AA level. Several times he has went 2 or 3 innings in an outing. He strikes out close to a batter per inning for his career.

Wouldn't surprise me to see him in the Reds bullpen this season especially if they move Parra which I think they will.
