Would the fact that his grandaughter plays at North be enticing enough for him to come back?

 

I hadn't thought about that one. I would think that he wants the best for her and with his experience and track record he may figure that noone could coach her better than he could. It is always hard on an ex coach to see a team play and always be thinking 'I would have done this' or 'Why didn't they do that'. You can't help it. That has probably played into his mind and made him consider wanting to come back and do it one more round.

 

Roy never played favorites, ... the best players & hardest workers played, ... and that is why he was so successful as a coach before! But, my guess is that he would harder on her than anyone else, but she would know that it is because he sees the potential she has (a great deal of potential) and only wants the best for her. She would probably like to get what her dad has, a state title ring.

 

One more thing I always liked about Roy, ... you know where you stand, good or bad! If you don't know how he feels, you haven't been paying attention!

 

I hate to see Coach Smith go. But if there has to be a replacement hired, I would be all for this one!

He do like his fishin! I think Stacey would do a great job as well. I also believe she will eventually become the coach, but not being a teacher in the system could hurt both of them based on the current guidelines.

Wow! That was fast! Apparently, he really wants to do it if he put it in that fast.

Then ole Roy might just be the next head coach at North...wouldn't that be something. It would be weird seeing him go up against former player Konnie at the ole Cardinals' Nest...wouldn't it? Would he be the coach that could finally end South Laurel's LOOOOOOOONNNNNGGGG winning streak against North?

Don't be surprised to see North hire a coach very fast, too. But I do know this: Brian Coutras told me that they want someone to coach that will be around longer than two or three years. He said that was a MAIN priority. He told me this: “When I came in here to North Laurel, my main goal is to create stability in every sports program here.

“It’s good to have someone here in the long haul and a perfect example of that is Jimmy Durham,” he added. “He’s been coaching softball at North Laurel for a long time and he has been very successful. With stability comes success and we’re looking for someone with a long-term type of commitment. We need someone that will stay here longer than two or three years.”

If this is a huge factor, and with Mr Coutras, I think it is, ... then I think you could see Roy & Rex coaching with Stacey on the sidelines. I don't see Roy being there more than a couple of season, and this would make for an easy transition to Stacy. However, if a teacher with coaching experience applies, per the system, it would be hard to hire Roy or Stacey.

 

But I am sure that Mr Coutras wants what is best for the program and the school. He has turned out to be a top notch AD. My guess is that he won't stick around more than a couple of years and will end up as an AD at the collegiate level at some point. His background and work history is pointing strictly in that direction.

I doubt Brian anticipated the possibility of a Kentucky coaching legend that brought multiple state titles back to London applying when he said that. I can't imagine he'd want to fight that battle this soon into his tenure.

I really don't think it would be much of a battle. Brian has established himself as a well-respected and top notch AD in less than a year at North and like mountain thunder said, if someone applies per the system (maybe Hauser and a lot of other people because North is a program on the rise), then it would be hard to hire him.

I would hate to see them miss the opportunity to get the ball rolling by passing on a legend, in the very county where he became a legend. Some may not apply as they may feel that if they were hired over him, they better get the ball rolling very quickly or face scrutiny.

 

You won't find a coach applying with his resume because few resumes like that exist. I don't understand why you have to take a teacher over someone who is obviously the most qualified candidate. I know why, I just don't agree with it. He won't want a FT teaching job so you don't have to create or find an opening, and you are getting a coach who has been there, done that several times, got the shirt & hat and has the rings to prove it! But you are right, with the rules in place, it may be tough to hire him, but how do you tell Roy that he wasn't the best candidate for the job? I couldn't do it with a straight face!

Well, it's not like Coach has been done wrong before...IMO.....thus, why he went to coach at Mercy. But we all know how things can go in Laurel County, especially with sports. It will be interesting to see who gets the job. I'm rooting for coach Bowling/and or Stacey.

Talked to AD yesterday and was told wouldn't be hiring a coach for another couple of weeks. Someone told me the other day former Somerset coach has applied, too.
