Coach Dinky Phipps Retiring From Barbourville Independent

Barbourville basketball coach announces retirement

Could he just be relocating across town?

First off, congrats to Coach Phipps on his retirement. It's hard to find a coach to stay at a program longer than 5 years, let alone 34. I think Barbourville has had coaches stay for long periods of time there.

Second, would he go across town?

I've always thought, no. There are, of course, a lot of rumors floating around and in some articles quoting him he's a little vague on the future.

I think he will sit out 90 days and come back and coach Barbourville.

That's what it could happen, per the requirements when someone retires.

If it has indeed been Coach Phipps' last game, then I count it as a pleasure to have watched his teams on more than a couple occasions. He got a lot out of the talent available to him at Barbourville.

I'm guessing that his retirement has everything to do with the reduction in pay that he was facing, which from what I understand, would have adversely affected his future income. As someone stated earlier, he may be able to get around this and still coach.
