Inside 14th region (2/9/15)

We’re in the final stretch of the 2014/15 regular season, which has been one of the best season in Kentucky high school basketball. Some upsets took place this past week while other teams continued to roll, here’s the recap of the games from last week.

Knott County Central has their 14 game win streak snapped with a 71-68 loss to Southwestern

Knott County Central opened up February with 2 region wins, 65-42 thrashing win over Perry County Central, who played without star guard Braxton Beverly who was out, not only this game but several others due to an ankle injury and a 90-37 win over district foe Jenkins.

The Patriots made the trip to Franklin County High School to face Pulaski Southwestern in the Gary Moore Classic. Southwestern came out hot and stayed hot nearly the whole game before the Patriots made a run to get the game closer but couldn’t get over the hump and take the lead. The loss ends Knott County Central’s 14 game winning streak and it’s Knott’s first loss to a team in the state of Kentucky.

Senior guard, Camron Justice scored his 3,339 career point in the 65-42 victory over Perry County Central which moved Camron to 7th all time in Kentucky scoring list, passing Taylor County’s Clem Haskins.

Upcoming Schedule: 2/10 @ Buckhorn, 2/14 @ Lincoln County

Perry County Central not only losses star guard Braxton Beverly but they also lose 3 straight

The Commodores would be without star guard Braxton Beverly for two games and those two games were against region opponents Knott County Central and crosstown rival, Hazard.

Knott County Central would defeat Perry County Central behind Camron Justice’s 26 point performance.

Braxton Beverly would have to sit out the Hazard game due to the same ankle injury and he was missed big time as Hazard would edge the Commodores 53-47 to push their skid to 2 straight games.

Braxton Beverly would make his return to the court against Lexington Lafayette but it would be in a losing matter as the Commodores would fall for the third straight time, as Lexington Lafayette got the best of them 80-75. Braxton Beverly led the Commodores with 24 points.

Upcoming Schedule: 2/10 vs. George Washington WV (@ Big House WV Little General Shootout), 2/13 @ Powell County

Buckhorn wins 3 straight as they prepare to face Knott County Central

Buckhorn picked up 3 good wins this past week against Estill County, Letcher County Central and Riverside Christian as they get ready to face off against Knott County Central on Tuesday.

Buckhorn was led by Connor Hoskins and Josh Crank against Estill County as they both had 17 to lead the Wildcats to a 65-52 win over the Engineers. Buckhorn led by as many as 25 and never trailed.

Upcoming Schedule: 2/10 Knott County Central, 2/12 June Buchanan, 2/14 Johnson Central (@ Nicholas County)

Estill County falls to Buckhorn but bounces back with 37 point win over Lee County

The Engineers welcomed in Coach John Noble and his Buckhorn Wildcats in on Tuesday night for a region game. Buckhorn got off to a 2-0 start, Estill would tie it 2-2 but that would be as close as they’d get as Buckhorn would go on a 7-0 run to push the lead to 9-2. Buckhorn would go up by as many as 25 before Estill County would get it down to what would be the final score 65-52.

Estill County would then turn their focus to Friday’s district double header against Lee County. Estill County would lead 14-5 after one quarter and that would pretty much be all she wrote as this game would not be as close at all as the first half of the first game was @ Lee County. Estill County would roll to a 37 point win, 722-36 to improve to 6-0 in district play. Senior guard Trevor Jones led Estill County with 28.

Upcoming Schedule: 2/10 Jackson City, 2/13 @ Berea, 2/14 @ Somerset

Jackson City wins 6 straight, improves to 14-13

After falling to Owsley County 61-57, the Jackson City Tigers rallied off 6 straight wins including a big 64-50 victory over highly 13th region rated Jackson County in the Kentucky Prep Showcase. Jackson City also defeated Bell County 65-57 the night before.

Upcoming Schedule: 2/10 @ Estill County, 2/13 Hazard

Letcher County Central plays good but comes up short against Buckhorn, loses 2 straight

After winning 3 straight games, Letcher County Central made their way to Buckhorn to participate in the Scott Blank Classic this past Saturday. Letcher Central would face home team, Buckhorn. Game would be a thriller that would go back and forth but once the final horn sounded, the scoreboard showed Buckhorn 64, Letcher County Central 48.

Upcoming Schedules: 2/10 Allen Central, 2/12 Breathitt County, 2/13 South Floyd
