The system utilizes the huge number of game results stored in the MaxPreps database. Generally, the more a team wins the higher the ranking, but the system takes into account quality wins (against other highly ranked opponents) and strength of schedule.

 

For example, a team's ranking is hurt more by losing to a team that is ranked below them verses a team ranked ahead.

Simon Kenton is way to high on the rankings but funny they are ranked ahead of Highlands.

MaxPreps is the worst. First, teams that upload stats and register to use their website get ranked higher. That's fair. Second, it's rankings are based heavily on stats - stats which are often incorrect. Missing games, wrong scores, wrong locations. All that bad info gives you bad rankings.
