Featured Replies

The 2014/15 Basketball season is in full swing. A lot of games being played among the 14th region. Some came down to the wire while others were lopsided, let’s take a look back at Week 2 of the season.

1.Knott County Central:

The Patriots and coach BB King continued to show why they are the top team in the mountains and region with two more impressive wins.

Knott County Central crushed June Buchanan by a 31 at 58-27 but the Patriots wasn’t done as they’d welcome in 15th region’s own Pike County Central on December 13. The Hawks were proven that they weren’t enough to top the Patriots as Knott Central would roll to another 30+ win at 87-51.

Knott Central starting guard, Camron Justice as been on fire in the first five games of the season averaging 24 points per game, shooting 61.6% from the field and 43.8 from three point range.

Upcoming Games: 12/16 Hazard, 12/18 @ Jenkins, 12/20 vs. Cov Cath (@ Rowan County)

2.Perry County Central:

After getting blown out in two of week 1’s games, the Commodores bounced back with three impressive wins in week 2.

Perry County Central would host 15th region powerhouse, Johnson Central in what was suppose to be a barnburner was the exact opposite as Perry County Central would dominated Johnson Central on their way to a 91-67 victory. The Commodores wouldn’t stop there was they would travel crosstown rival, Hazard in what is always a packed house, biggest rivalry in EKY game, Perry County Central would get off to a hot start and wouldn’t look back on their way to a 67-47 win over the Bulldogs. Buckhorn would make the trip over to Perry County Central the very next night in what would be one of the best ball games in the 14th region. Perry Central and Buckhorn would go back and forth but in the end it was the Commodores who would prevail with a 63-57 win.

Perry County Central junior guard Braxton Beverly would drop 28 on Johnson Central, 30 on Hazard and 19 on Buckhorn.

Upcoming Games: 12/19-21 @ Twin Lakes Holiday Classic

3.Cordia:

The Cordia Lions played just one game last week but it was a big one as they’d go on the road to Hazard and come out with a 66-65 Overtime win over the Bulldogs.

Upcoming Games: 12/20-22 @ Webster County Holiday Classic

4.Buckhorn:

Buckhorn played two of the best games in the 14th region this past week when they would go into OT with Leslie County and come out with a 66-65 win over the Eagles. Buckhorn would go to Perry County Central and go toe-to-toe with the Commodores and came close to upsetting the Dores’ in a big 54th district matchup as they fell to Perry County Central 63-57.

Upcoming Games: 12/15 Lee County, 12/16 @ Breathitt County, 12/19 Hazard, 12/20 Lewis County (@ Rowan County)

5.Hazard:

The Bulldogs got off to a hot start last week defeating Lee County 87-58 on December 9th but would fall hard to crosstown rival, Perry County Central 67-47. Hazard would return home Saturday afternoon hosting the Owsley County Owls in what would be a barnburner. Owsley had a 6 point lead late before Hazard would hit two three’s to tie the game. Hazard would need a tip-in at the buzzer to win the game.

Upcoming Games: 12/16 @ Knott County Central, 12/19 @ Buckhorn

6.Leslie County:

The Eagles check in at #6 this week after going 1-2 this past week but one of those L’s was to #4 Buckhorn on the road. Leslie County would pickup a 86-62 win at Breathitt County to open up the week but would fall to Buckhorn 66-65 in overtime the very next night. The Eagles would make the trip to Clay County to battle the Tigers in the Bobby Keith Classic, Clay County would be too much for the Eagles as they’d roll to a 89-69 win.

7.Letcher County Central:

The Cougars come in at 5-1 after picking up 3 wins last week with two of those going right down to the wire. The Cougars would welcome in Union Virginia into Whitesburg for a Tuesday night contest. When the final horn sounded it showed Letcher County Central 55, Union VA 41. Letcher County Central would travel to Phelps to take on the Hornets Thursday night. This would be a better game than what most people thought. Letcher County Central would leave Phelps with a 53-48 win. Letcher County Central would host Belfry on Saturday in what would be another

barnburner that would go to overtime with Letcher County Central prevailing 72-69.

Upcoming Games: 12/19-20 @ Hyden Citizens Bank Classic (Leslie County HS)

8. Estill County:

The Engineers only had one game last week but it was against a team that they crushed 58-20 last year, Jackson City. Game would be a back and forth game with Estill County leading by 1 at halftime. Jackson City would give Estill their best shot but in the end Estill County would come out victorious 69-62 win.
