Notes: KCD, though young (three starting sophomores and a junior join one senior) is very, very talented. Very fast, athletic, and aggressive. They play in-your-grill man defense, and attack the basket with abandon. Very good at getting out on breaks - even after made baskets. It was all Oldham could do to keep pace in the first half, which ended with OC up by just 2. Both teams shot well - especially KCD, which was getting to the rim for layups and hit 15 of 26 (57.6%) in the first half. Anthony Mathis of KCD with 22 first half points.

Second half notes: Oldham blitzed the Bearcats in the second half, beginning with a 35-16 third period. The Colonels shot lights-out in th eframe, hitting 12 of 22 shots overall and 5 of 6 threes. Hayden Hawes hit four of six shots in the third, including 4 of 4 from beyond the arc to lead the charge. Five Colonels had at least one three on a night Oldham hit 9 of 17 (52.9%) beyond the arc and 40 of 74 (54.1%) overall. Six Colonels reached double figures, led by Hayden Hawes with 18. Griffin McClarty had 15; Jacob Bates and Brandon Johnson both came off the bench to score 14. Bates also led the team in rebounds with 7. Madison Job and Connor Hicks each had 10. Oldham clicKed on both ends; defense limited KCD to just 20 second half shots.

KCD is really good and you better be ready to play in high gear when you meet up with them!

KCD is now 1-3, the sole win being a one-sided victory against Portland Christian. Not sure what to think of them yet. Will be in a better position to do evaluate them after their next two games against Whitefield Academy and Lexington Sayre.

Actually, that is not correct. KCD is 2-4 after their trip to a tournament in the Bahamas, not all of which was shown on the khsaa site. If you haven't seen KCD, you might be surprised. Almost all of the team is back from last year's All-A region champs for the Bearcats, and coach Booker has done a really good job. 6'4" guard named McCray - son of former U of L star Scooter McCray - who is special. Sophomore Anthony Mathis is one of the best penetrators I've seen in years. Those two alone are awfully hard to stop, but KCD has plenty of complementary players who play their roles well. Three players average double figures, and they play faster than 90% of the teams Oldham will see this year.

That said, Oldham was clearly the better team and the Colonels were an unstoppable force in the second half on both ends of the court. KCD shot just 25% in the second half and Oldham's passing was simply superb.

 

Kudos to the Colonels; they are off to a really good start to the season....and best of luck o a KCD squad that has the firepower to head back to the All-A state tournament!

I have seen KCD play (twice), and saw them play 4-5 times last year. Anthony Mathis is a very nice player who could play a lot of places, Malyiek McCray is athletic, and Colin Ferguson is a very solid player who can shoot. They form a very nice core, although I think there is some drop off after those three. You likely are correct that they will return to the All A state tournament. But I am not sure that will satisfy them this year; I think they are looking for more. And they may achieve more, either in terms of advancing in the All A state tournament or in beating some of the upper level Seventh Region teams. I am just not convinced yet they will do so, based on what I have seen or from a 33-point loss to what is obviously a very good Oldham County team. I am going to let the season progress a little further before I pass judgment on them.
