As the playoffs continue to wine down, more teams would find themselves either advancing and playing for a regional championship or they’d be going home. Several surprises took place throughout the mountains this past Friday night.

1. Russell 32, Estill County 9

Estill County made the long trip up to Flatwoods to take on the Russell Red Devils, a team that they haven’t beaten since 2003 and a team that demolished them last season in the first round of the playoffs.

Estill County would command the first quarter but would lead 3-0 going to the second quarter courtesy of a 20 yard field goal by Levi Tipton.

After that it was all Russell as they would roll to a 32-9 victory. Russell would have 2 pick-6’s in this game.

Estill County quarterback, Trevor Jones would finish his high school career (3 years) on 190/387 passing for 2,766 yards and 28 touchdowns, 12 interceptions while rushing for 3,129 yards on 404 carries and 48 touchdowns.

Russell improves to 10-2 and will host Bourbon County in the regional championship game next Friday.

Estill County ends the season at 9-3.

2. Hazard 47, Campbellsville 21

Campbellsville would make the 3 hour trip up to the mountains to take on the Hazard Bulldogs in the second round of the class 1A playoffs.

Hazard wouldn’t have much of a problem getting past the Campbellsville Eagles as they would run out to a 47-21 victory.

Brandon Jones lead the way rushing for Hazard with 200 yards on 20 carries and 2 touchdowns.

Hazard quarterback Tanner Morgan completed 11 of 15 passes for 239 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Hazard improves to 10-2 and will host Williamsburg in the regional championship game next Friday.

Campbellsville ends the season at 7-5.

3. Paintsville 30, Pikeville 6

Pikeville demolished Paintsville 62-8 earlier in the season and would welcome in the same Paintsville Tigers on Friday for a rematch.

The rematch was not what the Panthers would be expecting as they would fall and fall hard to Paintsville 30-6.

Paintsville improves to 10-2 and will travel to Raceland for the regional championship game next Friday.

Pikeville ends the season at 11-1.

This would be the biggest surprise in the mountains this past Friday night but not the only surprise.

4. Covington Catholic 19, Johnson Central 7

7-4 Covington Catholic would make the trip to Paintsville to face Johnson Central in a rematch from last year’s playoffs. Johnson Central would be a perfect undefeated at 11-0 going into this game.

Johnson Central would be hoping for a different outcome than past several years when it comes to facing Covington Catholic or Highlands in the playoffs but this year would be the same result just a different score as Covington Catholic, once again would defeat the Golden Eagles (19-7) and end their perfect season.

Covington Catholic improves to 8-4 and will travel to Highlands to face the Blue Birds in the regional championship game.

Johnson Central ends their season at 11-1.
