Whitley County 34 Harlan County 32

Featured Replies

After leading most of the game Harlan Co let this get away in the closing minutes.

Wow, that sounds like it must have been an good game. Any details?

I didn't get a chance to listen to this game.

After the loss to Bell County, if anyone had told me Whitley County would be 4-5 with a week to go in the season, I'd have thought they needed professional help. Turns out I need it.

Whitley took at 7-0 lead early and Harlan scored 20 unanswered points. Whitley had the opening kickoff of the second half but had to punt and Harlan blocked the punt and took at 26-7 lead in the third quarter. Then Luke Woods the WC quarterback went to work. He had 3 touchdown passes in the second half and threw of over 300 (three hundred) yards in the second half. IN THE SECOND HALF alone. Whitley which had been struggling defensively stepped up and got stops when they needed them which gave the offense an opportunity to get back into the game. The Colonels got the ball back with 4:51 left in the game and marched down the field and scored with 1:41 left in the game to take a two point lead. Austin Ysidro stepped in front of a Harlan pass to intercept which put the game away. Whitley goes to 4-5 on the season and will play Letcher County Central for a district Championship next week in Whitesburg. Who would have thought it??? Only the guys in that Whitley locker room.

Jason Chapel should be considered for COY honors but with the great job that Larry French had done at Southwestern he won't get it but it has been a masterful job getting a handle on the season after a terrible start to get back to this point.

I thought that was a low point of the season obviously but it came early and the Colonels were able to regroup and although it took a while to get that first win they played much better and came together as a team after that game. Shockingly the Colonels who suffered through a terrible 1-10 season last year never wavered in their resolve to get going.

Clearly a young team that never stopped believing in themselves or their teammates. Isn't that what it is all about????

Big win for Whitley they battle Letcher this week for the district title.
