After starting the season with four losses, the Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds are back on the winning track and looking forward to the playoffs.

NewCath, the Class 2A state champion in 2012 and state runner-up in 2013, came into this season with first-year starters in several key positions, including quarterback.

In their first four games against opponents from larger schools, the Thoroughbreds were outscored, 141-43, but they’ve won all of their Class 2A district games and could be a state titlecontender once again.

“We can’t afford to look past anybody, but if we keep working hard and getting better I do think we have a shot,” said NewCath head coach Dan Wagner.

A couple of changes in the starting lineup helped the Thoroughbreds turn their season around. The coaching staff put sophomore Patrick Henschen at quarterback and moved junior Erik Anderson from quarterback to wide receiver and defensive back.

After a rough debut in a game against Campbell County when he was sacked several times, Henschen has learned to provide the passing threat that NewCath needed for a more balanced offensive attack.

“I think he’s got a bright future,” coach Wagner said of Henschen. “Things don’t rattle him. Even when he was having all those sacks you never saw any emotion or frustration or anything like that in him. He just kept at it.”

Anderson has also done well since the position switch, especially on defense.

“He’s such a good athlete that he’s really made a big difference at safety and cornerback,” Wagner said. “He got three interceptions in the first three games since he’s been out there (on defense) for us.”

Regardless of what's happened over this season and past seasons, I can't imagine that anyone is looking past the Breds. I hope they can make it back to state again; guess we will see what happens. Win or lose, I think we will know more of what to expect after they play Beechwood. The Tigers are looking really good and better IMO compared to the past few seasons. That particular game is always fun to watch. Either way, I believe this game will serve as a good measure on more of what to expect out of the Breds in the postseason.
