Somerset basketball

Getting rid of Coach Thacker would be a big mistake. It was disappointing to lose in the first round of the district, particularly with the region being as wide open as it was. However, getting rid of the coach because of a few early exits is not the answer. Especially considering that until this season Somerset was in a district with 2 4A schools and 2 large 3A schools and they still wins 20 games most years. The fact is the program is solid all the way down to the grade school level. Counting varsity, JV, freshman and grade school I believe that the 8th grade team was the only one with a losing record. The 6th grade team was undefeated and the 4th and 5th grade AAU team won the state title. Developing a solid feeder program takes a lot of work and is what ensures the consistant success of the program. Coach Thacker is responsible for the development to a large degree. That said I can understand where some people have questions about his style of play. When you play a 2-3 defense most of the time it makes it hard to force tempo and allow your team to out-athlete an inferior team (it also makes it possible to stay in a game with a bigger, quicker team sometimes too), when you can't force tempo and play games in the 40's to low 50's all it takes is a short hot streak by the other team to give them a chance to win. So while I would like to see more of a plan B in games where Somerset needs to force tempo its hard for me to argue with someone who consistently wins at one of the smaller schools in the region.
