RACELAND Coal Grove entered Friday’s game at Raceland with the reputation of a big, physical, road-grader rushing attack.

The Hornets used that power game and a pair of big plays to earn a 26-23 halftime lead. But the host Rams ran wild in the second half to pick up a 48-32 victory.

“They were a big team, and they really controlled that second quarter,” Raceland junior running back Carson Christian said, “but I think we maintained well and were able to come back the second half and do well.”

Christian got in the end zone four times — rushing for 123 yards and three touchdowns, and catching a scoring toss.

“I had no idea he had four touchdowns,” Raceland coach Michael Salmons said of Christian afterward. “Carson’s a guy that’s been working. He gives us a change-of-pace back, and I thought tonight he really came into his own. Proud of him.”

Kane Snyder added 125 rushing yards as the Rams (4-1) ran for 341 of their 475 total offensive yards. Raceland had thrown for 901 yards and rushed for 514 through its first four games.

Coal Grove (2-2) led rushing yards at halftime, 139-109. It led the score too, thanks largely to two big-play TDs to bookend the half — Austin Ruggles’ return of the opening kickoff 79 yards to paydirt, and Isaiah Gunther’s 59-yard scoring reception from Jesse Rigsby as the second-quarter clock hit all zeroes.

However, Raceland racked up 232 rushing yards in the second half, while the Hornets had 86.
