Frankfort High Panthers Notebook (09/16/14)

Featured Replies

The #2 BGP Frankfort Panthers head into week 4 of the season coming off a bitter loss to their Eastside rival Franklin County 22-13. The Panthers have no time this week to spend licking their wounds as they prepare for another cross town battle with their Westside foes 3AWestern Hills Wolverines.

Last week the Panthers were tamed by the pesky group of Flyers. Panthers started out strong with a block punt on the first series of the game. The defense played well all night even though they lost the battle of Field position. The Panthers offense never got into a good rhythm majority of the night. The Flyers stout defense provided a difficult test, but the Panthers didn’t do themselves any favors as it rained Yellow Flags. The Panthers had only 1 offensive possession on the night that they did not have an offensive penalty to overcome. After the loss the Coaching staff understands there are lessons to be learned. So Coach Foley says the thing to take away from this loss is the Panthers kept fighting to the end, they battled in Playoff like atmosphere and they continued to fight through adversity. The Panthers lost a pair of starters early in the game due to injury and a long with several self inflicted wounds.

After playing three 5A schools to start the season this week the Panthers will face a much improved team from class 3A Western Hills. When the Coach was asked what the focus will be this week for the Panthers he stated, “Back to Basics!” The Panthers will spend the next week of re-teaching concepts. The bad thing when you lose a game you weakness get exposed, and with the rash of injuries for the Panthers must continue to focus on building depth with young guys that are stepping up. When you have a group of young guys you sometimes have to revisit basic fundamentals before you can move on to second step. Second thing the Panthers will focus on is being more aggressive early offensively. Coaching staff feels that are not taking enough chances early in the offensive possessions.

Player Spot Light

This week player spot light is Senior Running Back/ Linebacker Chris Brooks. Chris is a 4 year starter on both offense and defense. Chris is not only playing running back, he also plays tight end for the Panthers. He is very versatile player in the fact that he understands many positions on offense that he can be used at different positions. He is valuable because his ability to the team for that reason. On defense Chris has led the team playing middle linebacker. He may be undersized for your typical linebacker, but his nose for the ball and physical toughness is indescribable. Chris year in and year out is one of the leaders in tackles. This season he ranks first through three games in tackles. He also leads the team with 22 solo tackles.
