Colonels looked sharp in this game and methodically took McNick apart and handed them their first defeat. Very good performance by the CCH midfield who thoroughly outplayed the McNick midfield. CCH strikers finished off some chances and the defense really played well against a speedy McNick attack. Goals by Ballow, Litzler and Kenney for CCH. McNick scored with about 10 minutes left on a corner. Some work to do on set pieces for CCH.

 

Good prep game for Trinity on Saturday.

 

As a side note, CCH went to 4-5-1 with about 20 mins left and up 3-0 and immediately McNick had the upper hand and scored about 10 mins later. CCH went back to 4-4-2 and finished strong.

Nice win CCH. McNick is a nice team so a 3-1 win is impressive. They only have 4 seniors on their roster and their best player (IMO... #2) is only a Junior, so they should be good again next year as well.

Next up... Trinity.

McNick was the best team CCH has seen this year. #10 was their best player IMO. Center back moved to forward late in the game. They had a couple of fast, slippery forwards and I think #2 was one of them. Colonels are a junior heavy team as well.

Their best player should be a kid named Garrison, who I believe is already sitting on some offers (he is a junior). Super fast up top, and they'll win a lot of games this year.

 

This is a solid win against a nice team early in the year.

Yes, he was good and fast. #3 for them was also a dangerous player. Both were bottled up by the CCH defense. Michael Wessels, Kurt Stegman and Austin Flynn all had solid games on the back line for the Colonels and Sam Romes was in the net for CCH all night and made a couple of plays when called upon. He's clearly the #1 for them in goal.

I have advocated for the Colonels to try 4-5-1 in the past, which they did last night to very negative effect. They had the wrong target player up top (in my opinion) to play 4-5-1 but I don't think that was the reason behind it working out so badly for them. CCH was up 3-0 when they went to the new formation coming out of a water break, clearly to just clog the midfield and close out the game. The McNick coach saw the change right away to his credit. Clogging the midfield actually aided McNick in this situation and with only one player up top, CCH was limited in who they could play the ball out to when they got possession. For the most part, CCH had their starters in the game when the change was made except for a couple of players. The formation was not effective as they became too defensive minded and could not keep possession in McNick's half.

thanks for the insight. sometimes it's not just of one target or who the target is but sometimes it's due how the mids play together with another body there. If you have 2 enter mids that play 60 mins playing with certain space and rolls then add a third and they don't practice that well and at game speed it can cause problems retaining possession.

When the third center mid was added, they looked totally out of sync. They only stayed in it for about 10 mins and I don't expect to see it again soon. With that said, Parker Kenney, Bryce Day, Joe Schuh and Rob Lilly all played very well as the four midfielders and as two McNick parents told me after the game, really just dominated the McNick midfield. Having watched CCH soccer for as long as they have been around, this is one of the best midfield combinations they have ever had when you consider all four players. CCH will have their hands full Saturday at Trinity.

The field was not huge by any means but was more than large enough for a high school game. Certainly as big or slightly bigger than CCH's field in width. I think the lack of two players up top to target with outlet passes hurt them and confused their tiny little high school brains....
