On Saturday September 6th, Johnson Central will welcome another out of state team into Eagle Field for a battle with the Golden Eagles. The team making the trip to Paintsville will be Mastery Charter North Pennsylvania.

Mastery Charter North Pennsylvania

Head Coach: John Davidson

Nickname: Pumas

League: Class 3A Division

Location: Philadelphia Pennsylvania

Mastery Charter North Pumas finished the 2013 season at 10-2, going 8-1 in conference play. According to maxpreps the Pumas lost in the second round of the playoffs to Martin Luther King 32-7.

Mastery Charter returns some of their top players from a year ago; Donovan Crabbe threw for 1,066 yards on 53/136 passing with 12 touchdowns and 6 INT’s. Taqee Ross (462 all-purpose yards) returns as well.

The Pumas return their top players on the defensive side of things; Isaiah Freeman (137 total tackles, 74 solo, 3 fumble recoveries), Quinlin Lambert (95 total tackles, 56 solo, 2 fumble recoveries), Idris Mateen (66 total tackles, 41 solo, 3 INT’s, 1 fumble recovery)

DeJason (DJ) Ellis kicked off 34 times last season for 1,287 yards and 3 touchbacks with his longest kickoff going 55 yards. DJ also had 165 punting yards on 6 punts.

Although the Pumas return some talent from last year’s team, they also lost a great deal of talent as well; Armani Fuller-Williams (1,056 yards on 156 carries, 9 touchdowns with his longest rush coming at 98 yards, also had 165 kickoff return yards); Jermaine Norris (78 rushing yards, 440 receiving yards on 26 receptions and 4 touchdowns), RaShawn Cleveland (76 rushing yards); Nasirr Mayo (232 receiving yards on 7 yards).

The Golden Eagles have had some luck against out of state opponents dating back to 2010, the Golden Eagles are currently 9-0 against out of state teams, their last loss coming to an out of state team was back in 2009 to Horn Lake Mississippi 33-20.

The Golden Eagles return both quarterbacks from last season in Bryce Workman (17/19 passing for 419 yards and 4 touchdowns) and Zach Gound (16/30 passing for 333 yards and 5 touchdowns.) Dalton Adkins (16 catches for 479 yards and 6 touchdowns) and Truman Salyer (9 catches for 127 yards and 1 touchdown) also return for the Golden Eagles. Returning for the Golden Eagles is Tyler Pack, record holding kicker.

The Pumas will make the long haul from Pennsylvania down to Kentucky to take on the Golden Eagles on Saturday September 6th. With the recent success that the Golden Eagles has had against out of state opponents, this could bold well for them. With the success that Mastery Charter North had last season, this could go well for them. It could be a dandy of a game this coming Saturday night in Paintsville.

Both teams come into this game at 1-0. Mastery Charter North defeated William-Tennet 21-13 while Johnson Central defeated Fairland OH 46-0.

Mastery Charter North comes ranked in at 192 in the latest Maxpreps rankings. Johnson Central comes ranked in at 16 in the state in Maxpreps rankings.

For football fans around the Paintsville area that don’t have anything to do this Saturday night, this could be a money’s well worth football game.

Looks like they are an equivalent to a Shawnee, Iroquoi of Louisville or a lower tier Lexington schools. JC shouldn't have any problems with them.
