Danville Admirals 2014 Football Preview

Featured Replies

The 2013 Danville Admirals finished the season with a 6-6 record and a loss to Prestonsburg in the second round of the playoffs. Head Coach Clay Clevenger's first year at the helm got off to a rocky start as the Admirals lost 3 of their first 4 games. However, things began to take form for the Admirals as they won 5 of their next 8 games. In Coach Clevenger's second year word around town is that the Ads have a new attitude and they look to restore Danville Admiral football back to what we all know it to be.

The 2014 Danville Admirals will miss the presence of Jawan Grey and Olajuwan Ford on offense and defense. Treyvon Sandifer will be a big loss up front on both sides of the ball and Jacobie Harris and Nolan Spann will be missed on defense.

The 2014 Danville Admirals will be returning 3 starters up front on offense: Will Kirk, Tyquan Matthews and Hamilton Young. Along with them returning will be TE Kyron Warren and QB Zack Dampier. Defensively the Ads will be returning Stephen Ray and Tyquan Matthews at the LB position and Elijah Ford and JJ Houston will be returning to the defensive line. In the secondary Aaron Hawkins will be returning as a corner. Hawkins also led the team in interceptions last year.

The 3 offensive lineman: Will Kirk, Tyquan Matthews and Hamilton Young along with QB Zack Dampier are expected to be the leaders of the Admirals offense. Dampier threw for 913 yards and 8 touchdowns and ran for 262 yards and 5 touchdowns as a freshman last season. The offensive line will be expected to give Dampier more time to complete his passes and open up holes for Stephen Ray, Tyrek Bradshaw, Damani Delrosario and Ray Bradshaw. With Jawan Grey and Olajuwan Ford gone those 4 running backs will get plenty of carries to replace the yards that Grey and Ford accumulated last season. Kyron Warren, Aaron Hawkins, Ellison Stanfield, Triston Coffey, Travion Hill and Jeremiah Wheat look to be targets for Zack Dampier this season.

On defense the Admirals will look to be led by Elijah Ford, JJ Houston, Stephen Ray and Tyquan Matthews. Those 4 will be counted on to be the leaders of the defense and will be needed to step up and assume those roles this season. Aaron Hawkins will also be counted on heavily in the secondary.

The goals for this upcoming season for the Admirals is to get better daily. They have a lot of new faces out this season along with some players who didn't play or finish the season with them last year. They are going to be inexperienced at a lot of places but they will have some raw athleticism as well. The key for the Admirals will be how they handle their first 4 games both physically and mentally. Based on the feedback around town things seem to be headed in the right direction under the direction of Clay Clevenger. If their recent scrimmage against Anderson County is a sign then things are definitely headed that way as it was reported on twitter that the Ads were defeating Anderson County 28-20 when the starters were pulled.

The Ads season gets underway on Friday August 22 against Russell County in the Forcht Bank Bowl at Campbellsville University.
