California Bans Full-Contact Practice In Off-Season And Limits Practice In Season

My two primary thoughts about this:

1) So apparently until now, football practice in California was able to be full-speed helmets and pads year round...

2) Now they will be going from as much as they wanted year round, to only being able to run full-speed drills twice a week for a total of 90 minutes and only during football season.

I don't know about the being able to do full contact year round. I can find out, though.

This really doesn't tear me up to bad to be honest. I think it will be great for the sport. I'm probably in the minority on these two thoughts, but that's ok...I kind of beat to my own drum as is. :lol2:

...but, I've always been one to believe that if a kid won't "hit" in August, he isn't going to in November. And, secondly, I think one of the main reasons a lot of these 'on the fence kids' choose not to play football is because of practice. For one, football practices (in some form or fashion, strength/conditioning, actual practice, etc) 8-9 months a year for 10 guaranteed games. It's competing sports however (we know the ones), play that many in 2 weeks (or, come June...in 2 days. lol). 80-90+ degree temps for the the bulk of the season, wearing all kinds of gear (at least for our part and many others across the country) and beating the hell out of each others isn't exactly the idea of a good time for many kids (even those who are playing).

I think a lot of these rule changes will do much more good for the sport than bad.

Here's my question: Who has a "90 minute full contact practice"? Sure a 90 minute practice with 30 minutes of contact drills, 30 minutes of conditioning and 30 minutes of team drills, but who has a full 90 minutes of dedicated contact, twice a week no less?

Solid point/question.

So, they are doing baseline concussion testing on everyone?:

Principal Frank Kozakowski says non-athletes are being given the exam because the school has experienced increased numbers of students being diagnosed with concussions from outside activities such as skateboarding and snowboarding.

I have to ask, are they also checking everyone for drug use? No, of course not.
