Bryan Station names Tommy Johnson Boys Basketball Coach

Featured Replies

Tommy Johnson, the new boys' basketball coach at Bryan Station, got an enthusiastic endorsement from Scott Chalk, whom he played for at Frankfort and served under as an assistant coach at Franklin County.

Johnson, 32, became Franklin County's head coach two years ago after Chalk left for Paul Laurence Dunbar.

The Flyers went 9-17 in Johnson's first year. They had a 15-13 record this past season and lost to Madison Central 75-72 in the first round of the region tournament.

Johnson, 32, succeeds Mike Allen at Bryan Station. Allen had a four-year record of 57-59 with the Defenders

"I jumped at the chance to coach those kind of kids, try to motivate them and push them to become big-time players like Shelvin Mack."

Johnson thinks the Defenders' talent level should make them "district and region contenders every year."

Bryan Station is in the same district as Henry Clay, Scott County and Sayre. Johnson noted that Henry Clay and Scott County met in the 11th Region finals this year, and Scott County went on to finish as state runner-up.

"So we know it's going to be tough. We need to get to work to be able to compete with those guys."

Johnson was a multi-sport star at Frankfort. He scored 1,380 points in basketball, and he was an accomplished quarterback in football. He went on to play football at EKU for two years.

Johnson was an assistant at Franklin County for six seasons under Chalk, and at Lafayette for one year under Mike Mendenhall III before becoming head coach at Franklin County.

I like Gold Sunrise editing from the article that appeared in the H-L. The quote they ran saying....

"Tommy has always been a tremendous person, a conscientious person, who has a real heart for trying to help African-American young men develop into the right kind of people,"

seemed to be totally unnecessary to me. Coach Johnson will do a great job with all his student athletes.

What does that have to do with Goldie? Goldie didn't write the article. Goldie didn't make that quote either. Goldie gave a blurb from the article and posted the link like Goldie always does.

Congrats to Coach Johnson! A lot of work to be done but one of the better jobs in the state. Hopefully there will be a quick turnaround for the Defenders!

Meant as a compliment to Goldie. The chosen blurbs from the article focused on the more applicable items.

Don't news articles generally try to place the most important items early in the article? This was the second line and it just struck me as unnecessary and especially not in the opening couple of sentences.

The statement by Chalk at the least is a bad choice of words. Coaches are in the business of trying to help all students, not just their African-American student athletes. What is meant by "right kind of people"? Does Bryan Station not have the "right kind of people"? Bad! Tommy will do a great job.

Magic,

Totally agree, not sure what Chalk was thinking, but I agree a bad choice of words.

I would have liked to seen coach Brown get the job, but I wish coach Johnson nothing but the best. All the kids at Station deserve a quality coach.

I took it that way. I posted what I thought was important to the article. Wish nothing but the best for the new coach.

Okay. Good deal. It read funny and I am very protective of my Goldie. Nobody messes with my Goldie. Not on my watch. :D
