Lexington Catholic's Coach Brandon Salsman a basketball genius?

 

Maybe. But for sure Salsman got more out this squad that he should have if you just looked at the paper. The team was 'out-talented' (on-paper) in many games and faced teams with highly recruited talent but they got a Regional title.

 

It would have been interesting had LexCath gotten by Scott Co. But that was a tough first draw.

Early on Dence was not trying to get to the block and was playing more on the perimeter. When they started to try and post up Banks, Banks work him hard down there. Also they brought in Rae and he helped neutralize Dence. I still think Tony Martini is the unsung hero of this team. Just a work horse. Rebounds and blocks all night, only had 5 points last night but were big points in a run which helped them calm a small storm by Lex Cath. I also like the fact that Billy went to the post when they tried to double Trent and the big shot was a kick out by Martini to Ware for three. They had Catholic guessing all night. The defense on Tanner was big by the Cards as well. If one of these guys you mentioned can step up for the run then you could see the third state championship of the year come to Georgetown.

 

First, IMO, Tanner Johnson has become nothing more than a spot up 3 point shooter. During warm ups he shoots it from 25-30 feet. He can get to the basket when he wants, he chooses not to for whatever reason. When guarded closely he is easily pushed out of the lane.

 

Second, Martini is a glue, no doubt. He had two key early blocks to help set the tone last night. He plays hard and is fun to watch.

 

Lastly, rumor has it Long did not start because of discipline issues...either way it took Catholic a full quarter to adjust. Really surprised they didn't attack Sc with Long out....and Scott Co will not win a state title. Draw is too tough and not enough offense against quicker and better teams than Catholic. Most teams won't let Ware spot up and shoot...he was open all night long. That made zero sense.

Well, I think he's at least a very good coach. Not many people can win the 11th in 3 straight years like he did during one stretch if I recall correctly. Salsman was also on those Haney staffs, and that Haney guy seemed to know a bit about the game.
