Mr Deeds Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 I am from Iowa, where wrestling is king. Nearly every school, small and large has a team, or shares with another program. Obviously Wrestling is not as big in Kentucky, but it is growing all around the world. How hard would it be to start a program in Kentucky? There are some big schools with money, and enough kids to pull from to fill a wrestling squad. Do these schools not have teams because the right people havnt come in to build a program and team people about the sport? I was just curious, as I have family in Kentucky and as a coach in Iowa, I have considered moving to Kentucky before.
Mr Deeds Posted February 28, 2014 Author Posted February 28, 2014 Well can someone at least tell me if wrestling has gotten more popular the past 5-10 years in Kentucky, and if so, how much?
rjs4470 Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Well can someone at least tell me if wrestling has gotten more popular the past 5-10 years in Kentucky, and if so, how much? Yes it has. Northern Ky is one of the hotbeds of growth with several youth programs and very good middle school and high school programs. It definitely takes a back seat to basketball and there are still many misconceptions about the sport. Poor practice facilities (the gyms get taken by basketball), few coaches are some of the problems the sport has.
naplesme Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 The sport is growing in Kentucky. It starts with elementary and middle school programs. Students get involved and want to continue in High School. Once the mat is purchased, usually the biggest start up cost, starting program is not much of a problem.
