2014 57th District Tournament Preview

The 2014 54th District Tournament should be a fun one. Johnson Central is the favorite but don’t count out Lawrence County or Sheldon Clark. Sheldon Clark owns a victory over the Golden Eagles but other than that the Golden Eagles have dominated this district. Johnson Central is the host of this year's 57th District Tournament.

1. Johnson Central:

Coming into the preseason the Golden Eagles were the favorite to repeat as region champs and they are making a strong statement, on an 8 game win streak and have won 9 of their last 10 games. One thing’s for sure, if the Golden Eagles keep playing this way, they will be hosting the 57th district crown on February 28th.

2. Lawrence County:

Coach Cook and his Lawrence County Bulldogs have played good all season and have been playing good lately, despite an upsetting 52-51 loss to Pike County Central on Friday night. Lawrence County owns two victories over the team they meet in the first round of the district tournament, Sheldon Clark.

3. Sheldon Clark:

The Cardinals are looking to get revenge on Lawrence County after the Bulldogs took the 2 meetings from the Cardinals during the regular season, if they can get past Lawrence County, they will be looking to do something that is hard to do and that’s knock off the Johnson Central Golden Eagles.

4. Magoffin County:

The Hornets have a first round matchup against the Paintsville Tigers, a team they defeated twice during the regular season, can they do it for a third time and get a date with Johnson Central?

5. Paintsville:

The Tigers have struggled this season, going a 10-13 but 0-8 in district play and have fell twice to the team they face in the play-in game in the 57th district tournament, Magoffin County. Paintsville maybe 0-8 in district play but one thing is for sure, don’t ever count out Bill Mike Runyon, if you do, he will beat you.

Players to Watch:

Shane Hall (Johnson Central) The #1 rated player in the 15th region is showing why he’s the #1 rated player in the region, averaging a double-double every game at 18 & 11. He also averages atleast 1 dunk a game.

Kyle Gullett (Johnson Central) he’s not a Shane Hall but he can score. Averaging 17 points a game and 5 boards a game.

Timmy Dalton, Robert Dalton, Brandon Richardson and Austin Chaffin (Lawrence County) all of these players are averaging double-figuring scoring for the Bulldogs. They’ve helped lead Lawrence County to an 19-9 record.

Trevor Blackburn and Chase Parsley (Sheldon Clark) These two players make Sheldon Clark go. They score when they are around the rim and they aren’t afraid to shoot the three.

Trenton Russell, Cory Pitts, Jeffrey Bolen (Magoffin County) these three players are averaging double-figures in scoring for the Hornets. Trenton Russell and Cory Pitts also average 8 rebounds per game.

Lane Daniels and Quinton Hensley (Paintsville) these two players are the one’s that make Paintsville go. Both average double-figures in scoring.

The Pairings:

February 24th…8:15 PM…(4) Magoffin County vs. (5) Paintsville (Play-in)

February 26th…6:15 PM…(4) Magoffin County/(5) Paintsville at (1) Johnson Central

February 26th…8:15 PM…(2) Lawrence County vs. (3) Sheldon Clark

February 28th…7:00 PM….Championship

My Predictions:

Magoffin County over Paintsville

Johnson Central over Magoffin County

Lawrence County over Sheldon Clark

Johnson Central over Lawrence County

I echo those predictions. Nice work!
