District 29 key games this week....North Oldham / South Oldham / Oldham County

Big District 29 matchups this week....

Monday, 1/27/14 - South Oldham at North Oldham - North Oldham has rebounded from an injury-riddle December that was borderline bizarre to play some pretty competitive ball in the month of January. They open district 29 play against South Oldham at home. South Oldham has dominated the district for the past decade, but the Lady Dragons come into this game struggling, with a record of 4-11. Both teams are looking for a bounceback win; North has lost 5 of its last 6 and is currently 5-6 overall; South has lost five straight and 8 of their last 9. South is 0-1 in district play. The game will be broadcast on the Pegasus Sports Network, beginning at 7 pm ET on The Pegasus Sports Network - PSN

Wednesday, 1/29/14 - North Oldham at Oldham County - The Lady Colonels hold the advantage in the race for the district #1 seed, having rallied to defeat Trimble County in December, and then taking a six point win over South at South on 1/10/14. The Lady Colonels are 6-6 as of this writing and riding a three-game winning streak. A win by Oldham cements the #1 seed. If North defeats South on Monday, and then Oldham on Wednesday, they would be a win over Trimble County away from claiming their first-ever #1 seeed. This game will also be broadcast on the Pegasus Sports Network at 7 pm ET on The Pegasus Sports Network - PSN

Colonel, the 29th district is down a bit this year, and my prediction is that both South and OC will dominate their games with North this week. However, the Pegasus broadcasts will be, as always, top notch. This year's district, more than normal in recent years, depends on the top seed. If there is a three-way tie for first and the tie-breaker is imposed, look out! North will still be No. 4, so the real horse race is to see which team will play them again in the district, as one deserving team will be staying home. The top three teams are all really even in the 29th this year, which hasn't been the case for quite a few of years - there's no lock-down favorite this time around.

Hi, Retropop!

Thanks for the kind words about the broadcasts! We're all about the kids and the fans, and that's it. So we appreciate the kudos!

I missed last night's broadcast due to the flu, but sat at home and listened to Scott and Tom....turnovers doomed North early and that was that against South. North is very much improved over last year, but will still be an underdog against Oldham Wednesday.

The issue against Oldham tomorrow night will be how North tackles the "twin tower" look of Kirk and Stewart while also defending McMurtrey here/there/everywhere. Those three players are playing really well, and Oldham as a whole is playing some pretty solid ball right now. Three of Oldham's four losses to KY schools were to teams ranked #2, #5, and #16....the other was to a 13-3 North Bullitt team that lost to Ballard by just 10. McMurtrey cleared the 2,000 point mark in her career this past week.....

but like you say, the 29th is a little down in that none of the district teams are likely to be ranked anytime soon.

South's coaching staff will do a good job of appealing to their team's pride and sense of tradition. The sense at South is that "...the district runs through Crestwood." And why shouldn't they feel that way? South has won the last five districts and 10 of the last 12. (Oldham Co won in 2008 and Carroll Co won in 2005, when South was in the old 31st) Sedoris is a load down low, but foul problems have plagued her at times, and South isn't the same when she's off the court. Still, defensively, South is probably the the most difficult to score against in the district. And although South has been erratic scoring, they have some shooters. Really like Erin Wilson, who seems to be blossoming here midway through the season.

Trimble is vastly improved after fielding a solid squad last year. Only a last minute meltdown vs. Oldham in December kept the Lady Raiders from being the team in the driver's seat now. Trimble is currently about a +19 in victory margin, best in the district. What looks like a likely Trimble-South first-round game, which could be a terrific first-round contest. It would be the kind of game where every little thing that happens could have tremendous end-of-the-game ramifications.

Kudos have to go out to Dan Pfaff and the NOHS staff. Despite an almost ridiculous December that yielded some truly freak injuries - at one time, North had to cancel games as they had just 6 available players on varsity - North came out of the gate fast, winning 3 of their first 4. And, although they were never really in the South game last night, they have competed this season. You can't go from 0 to 60 overnight in basketball, and it appears that the players and coaches at North Oldham are on the right track toward building a solid program. Good for them and best of luck!

Scott and Tom will have the call Wednesday night for the North vs. Oldham game....7 pm.....The Pegasus Sports Network - PSN (click on one of the school logos to go to the broadcast)

Thanks for the update on the 29th district. I have not been to any games this season but still cheering from home!

District shaking out a bit after two games this week, as South beat North on Monday and Oldham defeated North tonight, 73-38.

District Standings:

Oldham County 3-0 clinches #1 seed

South Oldham 1-1

Trimble County 0-1

North Oldham 0-2

Yet to play: North vs. Trimble and Trimble vs. South. Seeds 2, 3, and 4 still up in the air.

Oldham's first "regular season championship", so to speak, since the 2008-9 season. They ultimately finished as the District 29 tournament runner-up, falling to South Oldham in the finals that year, 50-47.
