1. Betsy Layne wins four straight, remain hot

Betsy Layne won all four of their games last week including the 15^th region All-A classic. Betsy Layne got things started with a 54-43 win over Shelby Valley, that win carried over to the next night when the Bobcats defeated Allen Central 55-37, Betsy Layne wouldn’t stop there as they’d beat Paintsville 64-53 to win the 15^th region All-A classic and defeating South Floyd 64-51. Betsy Layne improves to 16-2 and are on a 5 game win streak and have won 9 of their last 10.

 

 

2. Johnson Central picks up two wins

Johnson Central and Coach McKenzie got to big wins last week defeating Paintsville 75-47 and Lawrence County 69-65 to improve to 10-5 overall and 5-1 in region.

 

 

3. Shelby Valley goes 1-1, improves to 13-4

Shelby Valley opened last week with a 54-43 loss to Betsy Layne in the 15^th region All-A classic, the Wildcats would bounce back and defeat Pikeville 68-60. Prayers go out to Shelby Valley star Tyler Carr who went down with apparent knee injury that might have ended his season.

 

 

4. Sheldon Clark goes 1-1, ends 2 game losing skid

The Cardinals opened up last week with a district game against Lawrence County, The Cardinals didn’t get the result they were looking for as they fell to Lawrence County 61-47. Sheldon Clark would bounce back with a 51-39 win over Tug Valley WV in the Hatfield-McCoy Shootout at Williamson WV Fieldhouse.

 

 

5. Lawrence County goes 2-1

Lawrence County played three games last week, winning two of those. The Bulldogs got things started off with a 80-65 victory over Prestonsburg. Lawrence County would build on that win by defeating Sheldon Clark 61-47. Lawrence County would play Johnson Central in a big district contest, game would go back before Johnson Central pulled out the close win, 69-65.

 

 

6. Pikeville drops 3 straight

After winning three straight heading into last week, the Panthers would drop three straight games. Losing to Paintsville 58-55, Shelby Valley 68-60, Letcher County Central 71-60. Pikeville was scheduled to play Greenup County on Saturday but that game was canceled.

 

 

Player of the Week:

Johnson Central’s Shane Hall became the 4th member in the history of the state of Kentucky with at least 400 career blocks. Shane is now 3rd all-time in the history of the state of the Kentucky in blocks in a career with 403 and needs only 4 blocks to move into 2nd place.

 

 

Note:

Johnson Central’s head coach, Tommy McKenzie tied the school record for most career Wins in a Career (122 - Wendell Wallen 1973-1979). Coach McKenzie reached the mark in 197 games while Wendell Wallen reached the mark in 201 games.

I think Johnson Central is clearly the #1 team in the region. Betsy Layne has a nice record, but their schedule has not been very tough. I see the top 5 as:

Sheldon Clark

 

East Ridge is a team on the rise, but I think the regional champion will be one of the top 5 teams...
