1. Cordia wins first ever 14th Region All-A Classic

Coach Rodrick Rhodes and the Cordia Lions got the schools first ever 14th Region All-A Classic title this past week.

The Lions got things started with a 63-41 win over Buckhorn. Cordia would then go on to face Hazard, a team they had beat 58-57 over in the republic bank holiday classic at Lexington Catholic. Cordia would repeat the victory with a 51-49 win over the Bulldogs. Cordia would face Leslie County in the finals, with each school trying to win their first ever 14th region All-A classic title. Game would be close throughout but in the end the Lions would pull away winning 54-44. Cordia will face the winner of the 8th region in the All-A state tournament.

2. Breathitt County defeats Powell County, wins 4 straight.

Breathitt County continued their winning streak Tuesday night with a 86-65 win over Powell County in Stanton. With that win, Breathitt County has now won 4 straight, dating back to December 30th and 9 of their last 10.

Braxton Whitmore led Breathitt County with 19, Wes Noble added 18 for the Bobcats.

Brett Goodwin led Powell County and all scorers with 25. Matt Brooks added 12 for the Pirates.

Breathitt County improves to 11-3 (5-2 Region)

Powell County falls to 7-9 (3-5 Region) – Not counting the Estill loss due to this game being before Estill/Powell.

3. Estill County wins 2, improves to 10-7

Coach Bentley and his Engineers won two games last week and improved to 10-7 on the season. Estill County was suppose to have played Jackson City, a team they had defeated 58-20 earlier in the year, this past Friday but due to weather conditions that game was rescheduled for this Monday night.

Estill County continued their winning ways Tuesday night as they defeated Mercer County 51-41 in Irvine, the same Mercer County team that derailed the Engineers by 30 last season.

Estill County then took their winning streak to Stanton to face arch rival, Powell County Pirates in a big 56th district contest. Estill jumped out to a 2-0 lead but once Powell County took the lead in the first half, Estill never led again until the second half. Estill County missed 4 layups underneath the rim. Powell went up 21-9 on Estill before the Engineers went on an 8-0 run to end the first half trailing 21-17. Estill continued their hot streak at the start of the second half hitting their first 4 shots which were 3’s. 3 of them came by senior forward Kris Dennis, who finished the game with 9 points. Once Estill re-captured the lead in the second half, that’s all it wrote as they’d stay in the lead, Powell would get as close as two points but the Engineers would hit their shots and free throws to pull away, 57-49.

Trevor Jones led Estill County and all scorers with 18, Trevor Jenkins added 14 for the Engineers. Estill got some help on the inside from center, Chase Alexander who had 9 points (4-8 FT) (3 blocks)

Brett Goodwin led Powell County with 17, including a one-hand dunk in the first half. Caleb McCoy and Austin Mullins added 10 points apiece for the Pirates.

Estill County improves to 10-7, (6-1 Region) (4-0 district, Estill is actually 3-0 in district because one of their district games was played in a tournament and doesn’t count towards district standings) and has won 4 straight.

Powell County falls to 7-10 (3-6 Region) (3-1 district)

4. Hazard goes 2-1, improves to 12-5

The Bulldogs participated in the 14th region All-A classic this past week, going 2-1.

Hazard got things started on Monday night with a 79-54 win over Wolfe County in Campton. Hazard would go on to face Jackson City on Tuesday night and the result would be the same as Monday night as the Bulldogs would pull out yet another victory, this time 72-35 over the Tigers. Hazard would face Cordia in the semi-finals of the 14th region All-A classic and wouldn’t get the result they’d hoped for as Cordia would win a thriller 51-49.

5. Knott County Central goes 1-1, improves 13-4
