Inside the 14th Region (12/16/13)

Featured Replies

Week 2 of the high school basketball season was during a much prettier week then week 1, with a lot of action taking place throughout the mountains including the 14th region. Let’s take a look back and some of the top games.

Perry County Central 66 Hazard 44:

In a game that most thought would be a close game was the exact opposite. Perry County Central jumped out early and never looked back as they rolled to a 66-44 win over crosstown rival, Hazard. Justin Johnson had his way with Hazard, having 5 dunks and scoring 23 points. Braxton Beverly had 22 points. Josh Hollan lead Hazard with 21. Chris Hudson was out for Hazard due to an all-star football game.

Perry Central remains undefeated at 6-0 (PCC defeated North Laurel on Dec. 14 in the Bobby Keith Classic @ Clay County), 1-0 in district.

Hazard falls to 5-1. 0-1 in districts.

These two will meet again on February 7th @ Hazard.

Estill County 80 Wolfe County 59:

In another game that many thought would be close and would go down to the wire was yet again the complete opposite as Estill stormed past Wolfe County 80-59. Estill got off to a hot start going up 8-0 before Wolfe would call a TO. Estill went up 11-0 before Wolfe would get their first points but it didn’t matter because Estill wouldn’t look back. Estill lead 35-30 at halftime. Trevor Jones and Trevor Jenkins combined for 30 of that. Trevor Jones finished with 21 points (2/3 from 3 all first half). Trevor Jenkins finished with 26 points (5/7 from 3 all first half).

Estill County improves to 3-2 (Estill defeated Jackson City 58-20 on Dec. 13).

Wolfe County goes to 3-1 (Wolfe defeated Anderson County 74-73 in the Kentucky Bank Classic @ Bourbon County).

This was one of 3 possible games between these two. Estill and Wolfe are scheduled to meet again in Campton on February 1st but may meet in the Red River Classic in Powell County at the end of December.

Knott County Central 79 Cordia 64:

A game between two of the top 5 teams in the 14th region and a district showdown, many students piled in Cordia’s gym to watch this game and to see if the Lions could pull the huge upset and knock off the Patriots, that wouldn’t be the case on this night as Knott Central would beat Cordia 79-64. Evan Hall led Knott Central with 21, Chance Cornett had 20 and Tennessee Commit Camron Justice had 18 points, 8 boards 5 assists. Christen Cunningham led Cordia with 27 points. Felix Frimpong added 18 for the Lions.

Knott County Central remains undefeated at 5-0 (defeated JBS 66-36 & Lex Cath 65-53), 3-0 districts.

Cordia goes to 2-2 (lost to Holmes 61-56 in the KY Farm Bureau Classic @ Expo Center). 0-1 district.

These two teams will meet again on January 30th @ Knott County Central.
