RACELAND — Before Friday night’s football game between Raceland and Ironton, Raceland assistant coach Mark Lewis was honored for his 41 years of coaching high school football. Along with being an assistant at Raceland, he spent 33 years as an assistant at Ironton.

While fans from both sides gave Lewis a standing ovation, Rams coach T.J. Maynard said he was scared Lewis would get back at him because he doesn’t like the attention.

“I didn’t know if I was going to get punched or not,” Maynard laughed. “Coach Lewis has been a great asset to our staff. He’s been a great asset for me, and a wealth of knowledge, so it’s really nice as a head coach to bounce ideas off of him and get his input. I respect what he has to say.

One of the classiest people I have ever had the honor of being associated with. As good of a coach as he is, he's an even better person.

Not to take away from Coach Maynard's pre-game speeches but I am still fired up from what Coach Lewis had to say!

As a life long fan I am so appreciative to have a coach like Lewis at Raceland. A great coach and a great example for High School kids to follow, and with some of the news in the last couple of weeks or so I think that all can see what a positive that is. One Word.....CLASS !

BTW...41 years wearing Orange and Black, I wonder if he sees those colors in his sleep.

Mark Lewis is the kind of man you want setting an example to your children. Great man, great teacher, and great coach.

Agree, a man that a kid playing under Coach Lewis now can look years down the road and be able to say with pride that " here was my coach " and he taught me the right way to play the game and more important, he taught me how to carry myself with class and do things the right way. Raceland, imo has been blessed with coaches now along in years past that were great coach and far more important a great men. I feel certain that players that played under R. Vanderhoof, B.T. Ross, Larry Heck, Jim Conley, Tom Sammons as well as others that have been at Raceland through the years could call and talk to them anytime about anything. That's what a "coach" is supposed to be and sadly there are ones that a person cannot look back on with pride. I am so thankful that the good, great ones far out number the bad.
