Final

I had hoped for a better outing for our guys tonight. They realized that this was probably their best chance for a 2-A win this season, and the chance to earn a playoff berth. But hoping for, and reality, tend to be two different things. Not due to a lack of effort or preparedness. Another case of simply being outmanned.

Newport kept drives alive by converting over and again on 3rd and long, Brossart stalled out too many drives (or offensive series) by failing to convert on 3rd and short.

Newport had too many weapons with Mulllins at QB and Joseph his primary ball-carrier. In the second period, Mullins demonstrated a nice passing attack utilizing different receivers - Tyree Bolden (2), Jayshawn Stanley, and Ray Gibson all caught well-thrown touchdown passes.

 

Contentious game for the first quarter as Newport ground out a 72 yard - 10 play drive to socre on a 1 yard run by Mullins, making it 7-0 following a Oscar Franco PAT.

The Wildcats' second score came at the 11:32 mark of the second period when Dom Joseph carried the piggy 1 yard for a Newport score, making it 14-0 following another Franco PAT.

The backbreaker came on an ensuing pooch kick to the far sideline which was run down by a Wildcat after traveling 10 yards, giving the Cats the ball and another score less than 21 seconds following the preceeding TD. This made the score 20-0 and the rout was on.

 

Casey Pelgen was under seige all night when the Mustangs fell behind and had to take to the air. Our big play of the night came late in the 3rd quarter when Pelgen found Craig Pfefferman in-stride for a 42 yard gainer.

 

Big John Turner was serving up Pork Chops tonight. Unfortunately, we were scrambling for broadcasting space during the pre-game and I missed out. Gives me an excuse to return to Newport Stadium sometime again in the near future. I also missed Wade's presence and friendly demeanor tonight. Didn't seem like the same place without having Wade in charge.

 

Things don't get easier as the Mustangs travel to Lloyd on Friday and then host NCC the following week.
