The Bishop Brossart boys and the Newport Central Catholic girls gave Northern Kentucky a chance at a sweep in Sunday's soccer championship doubleheader of the Touchstone Energy All "A" Classic Statewide Tournament. Both teams advanced to the championship game with Saturday semifinal victories at Elizabethtown Sports Park.

NewCath eliminated Bethlehem, 5-2 in the girls' semifinals. The Thoroughbreds, a three-time small-school state champion in 2005-07, when the tournament was known as the All "A" Cup, play Owensboro Catholic, a semifinal winner over Louisville Collegiate, in Sunday's 11 a.m. final.

Brossart and NewCath are attempting to duplicate their 2005 state sweep and become the first former All "A" Cup champions to win the All "A" Classic.

Red-hot NewCath (10-1-2) dominated first-day action of the girls' tournament, outscoring opponents 15-2, with a 13-0 advantage in the first half. Five goals came from freshman Taylor Tolle, who scored three times in the semifinals. The 'Breds are unbeaten in their last 11 matches, going 9-0-2 since Aug. 26.

Junior midfielder Loren Zimmerman scored a goal in both Saturday contests. She put NewCath on the board in the semifinals moments after her previous breakaway attempt resulted in a shot that hit the post. The 'Breds scored twice in the first 10 minutes against Bethlehem, getting the other goal from Tolle.

The 'Breds received a score and a record-breaking assist from center midfielder Sam Bunzel against Bethlehem. The Thoroughbreds' 2012 second-team all-state pick tied the NewCath all-time assist mark in the 10-0 quarterfinal romp over previously unbeaten Pikeville, and broke it in the semis.

"Sam's leadership has been huge for us," 'Breds coach Kevin Turnick said. "She's been giving up goal opportunities so she can distribute better chances to everybody else, and has become a big playmaker."

Bunzel, a senior, pushed her career assist total to 25, surpassing the previous mark of 24, shared by 2006 graduate Stephanie Burns and 2008 grad Andi Macke.

"We've been working really hard in practice and in games on the first five minutes and the last five minutes," Bunzel said. "We're very stoked right now to be in the final. It's go big or go home."

So much for statistical comparisons. The Newport Central Catholic girls' soccer team rendered them meaningless Saturday during quarterfinal action at the Touchstone Energy All "A" Classic Statewide Tournament at Elizabethtown Sports Park with a 10-0 mercy-rule blowout against previously unbeaten Pikeville.

The match ended after one half.

"The girls were focused to get going," NewCath coach Kevin Turnick said. "Playing on turf, we utilized our team speed."

Pikeville, which fell a game short of last year's KHSAA state tournament with a loss in the 15th Region tournament final, was one of the last of Kentucky's unbeaten teams. The high-powered Panthers were held scoreless for the first time this season and had their 11-game winning streak snapped.

Entering play, Pikeville, the state's second-highest scoring team, had more than twice as many goals (68) as the Thoroughbreds (28). The Panthers' Baylie Vanhoose, with 30, had more than the entire NewCath squad. She ranks sixth in the state.

But it was the Thoroughbreds' leading scorer, Taylor Tolle, who made her presence known. The freshman forward scored two goals in the opening minutes, pushing her total to 10. "She did all her scoring in the first three minutes," Turnick said. "It was 5-0 in the first five minutes."

Senior midfielder Chandler Cain added a pair of goals for NewCath, which hasn't lost since Aug. 26. Also scoring for the Thoroughbreds were Lauren Zimmerman, MiKayla Seibert, Amber Gries, Amanda Schabell, Carly Gessner and Olivia Schalk.

"We used our speed and touch to get behind their defense," said Turnick, who guided the Thoroughbreds to three consecutive small-school state titles from 2005-07 when the in-season event was known as the All "A" Cup. They are in the small-school state tournament for the first time since their last championship.

NewCath, attempting to become the first former Cup champion to win the Classic, advanced to Saturday evening's semfinals and was looking for its 10th win of the season against Bethlehem, a quarterfinal winner over University Heights. The final is Sunday at 11 a.m.
