Beechwood Tiger Insider - Week Five

Week Four Recap

The Tigers played their "Mayfield road trip" game last week, traveling to undefeated 5A power Franklin County. In the years that Beechwood would have to travel to Mayfield for the state semifinals, Beechwood tries to schedule a road trip of some distance to give the team a road trip experience. The previous trip two years ago the Tigers traveled to Elizabethtown, but those games did not work out with E-town struggling a little. Beechwood wants a high level winning opponent for this trip. They found one this year in Franklin County. The Flyers have featured one of the most potent offenses in KY over the past two years. It was clear why. This team has superior speed at the skill positions. Fortunately for Beechwood, the Tigers have one of their fastest teams ever this season so they were able to match up well with the Flyers. The game was a very good tight contest all the way through and went down to the final seconds. Franklin County was able to score two 4th quarter touchdowns and pull out the 28-24 win on their homecoming night. It was odd for Tiger fans to be a homecoming opponent. I wonder when was the last time that happened?

The freshmen continued their road trips to 6A opponents with a game at Dixie Heights. The Tigers were coming off a win versus Highlands but they were not able to add another one to the win column as the Colonels put a 40-20 loss on the Tigers.

That left it up to the JV to put one in the win column for the program. It wouldn't be easy with the 6A Ryle Raiders visiting. This game was much like the varsity game - a back and forth battle. The Tigers has to hang tough in this one as they never led till scoring the go ahead TD in the fourth quarter. Then they had to get a defensive stop to pick up the win, which they did. Final score in this one was 26-20 in favor of the Tigers.

The Week Ahead

The varsity travels to play what has become a bit of a nemesis for the Tigers - the Holmes Bulldogs. Holmes is one of those games that seems to bring out the worst in the Tigers. Last year, this game was probably the worst performance of the season for Beechwood. One mistake after another allowed Holmes to get a 33-21 win at Beechwood. In 2011 at Holmes, a great Tiger team had an average margin of victory of more than 40 points a game. Yet in the trip to Holmes they could do nothing right and struggled mightily to a 21-13 win. It was one ugly night of football. The Tigers will be facing a Holmes team with a new coach playing good football. It is an important game for Beechwood to continue their weekly improvement and get a win.

On the freshman front, the Tigers get a first hand look at the freshman league favorite when they travel to Covington Catholic. The Colonels are undefeated and rolling over their opponents weekly. It will be a tall order for the Tigers. This game is Wednesday night at 6 pm.

The JV will host the Campbell County Camels at 10 am Saturday. The JV has won two in a row over 6A opponents and will be looking to make it 3 straight.

I think the Freshman game is actually @ 5:30pm tonight @ CCH. No lights and all.
