Advantage inside the box

Featured Replies

Advantage rule says play on if a player is fouled but the player either continues on or a teammate with the ball. Should advantage be given inside the penalty box? If you are given advantage and you don't like the result of the advantage that doesn't mean you get to come back and take a pk. Just wondering as it sounds like advantage was played in the cch vs cooper game and the fans want a pk since the outcome didn't result in a goal.

First of all, that call didn't alter the game as CCH won anyway, even if by just a goal. Not sure there are a lot of fans complaining about it but at the time they were. I do have to say the call was laughable though. Advantage inside the box? Come on....

The CCH player was fouled by the Cooper player preventing him from getting to the ball. The ball then goes out of bounds, the ref then blows the whistle, stops the clock and gives a yellow card to the Cooper player for the foul but awards no PK. No advantage sign was given at the time and no reputable ref would do that anyway. It was a clear PK foul, there was no advantage to allowing play to continue, she didn't make that call at the time but was doing what she could to keep the game close apparently. A yellow card for a foul inside the box that does not result in a PK? You may not see that again if you watch soccer the rest of your life.

I saw a similar play in a recent JV game.

Right outside mid had a breakaway. Keeper came out and blew up the player, ball squirted to left side of box where left outside mid came charging (and was challenged), but missed wide. Right outside mid was injured on the play, and after the injury delay, the official yellow-carded the keeper.

As I was leaving the game, I passed the official in the parking lot, and my curiosity got the better of me. I asked the official what the yellow card was for on the keeper. He stated the keeper made NO PLAY ON THE BALL, and attacked the offensive player WITH CLEATS UP. He stated that offensive team "had advantage", because the ball was loose in front of the net. He also said, that if the ball were not in an advantage situation, he would have red-carded the keeper for dangerous play, resulting in a PK.

So where is the true advantage? Correct call?

The advantage is that it went to the team's player and he made a play on it.........If he hadn't missed wide, there would be no issue.

In the CCH game, the foul occured and the ball did not end up in the same team's possession again.......It was not a shot on goal.....so PK.......at least it should have been. There were several questionable calls...for both sides....inthis one....but that one was a clear miss.

Coincidentally, the Referee in the Thomas More match on Saturday played advantage in the box, and once the possession was lost, then retroactively awarded a PK. The Thomas More sideline went berserk, and in my opinion, rightfully so. TMC went on to win, and that goal (the PK) was the only one they allowed, but it really seemed clunky and awkward.

That does sound clunky. Foul in the box..........give the PK. Any team would take that vs given some advantage and try to score.

Keep in mind the foul in the CCH/Cooper game was bad enough to warrant a yellow card from the same ref.

The ref made the signal for advantage, the play went on for a good :20-:30, then, once lost, he retroactively rewarded the PK. The TMC defender was beside himself, as you can imagine. I've never seen a play like it at the college level...or any other for that matter.

Heck, in my son's U9 Select game our striker was fouled in the box and had a HUGE advantage (still on his feet, with the ball, and one-on-one with a goalie on his heels) and they blew it dead and issued the PK. If they get it at that level, they should get it in H.S. or College.

That was my take on the play I witnessed (give the PK). As stated, the left outside mid was challenged. It was by no means a gimme .. I think most teams would take the opportunity at a PK versus a challenged advantage.
