Do Freshman "move up"?

Featured Replies

After their season is over, does your HS "move-up" freshman to JV-V teams?

(I realize some teams have had frosh already "up" all season). Is it as a "reward" or keep them from "other sports"?

Well, it all depends on the ability of the player. If he is a good player, he will move "up", or he will already be "up". If he isn't a very good player, he will move at the speed necessary to continue his own individual and team achievment.

Usually at St. Henry selected few kids get rewarded to play JV.

It is a reward...I don't think anyone is trying to keep kids from other sports

It's been my observation that with the major of the teams, almost all of the freshman team players also play JV and some of them even play Varsity. I would think that even with freshman players who do not make the JV and V teams their freshman year, the goal is to work with them and prepare them to move up.

It really just depends on the ability of the player. If you look at the elite programs in the state you rarely see many freshmen on the Varsity roster. The JV roster will sometimes include some of the better freshmen to fill out the bench and some of the more skilled and mature players actually play some JV minutes. I can see how some programs would treat moving up to the JV-Varsity level as a reward for consistent play and ultimately this helps to create more of a bond between the sport and the athlete.

I don't think freshman should be moved up to JV, after the frosh season.

I do think that JV players deserve to be rewarded with being able to dress varsity, though.

If a player can play then a player can play. Someone shouldnt be held back due to age or grade. If player is mentally and physically able then the player could start varsity. Rushing players sometimes hurts the individual but not often, usally more experience the kid gets the better he'll be in the years to come. A 7th grader will start my team if capable. This allows me to work with this kid and more time to build for the future. I look at it more of a reward for the player's hardwork and dedication than anything. I will never play a senior over a freshman if the freshman is better because as the season progresses it will only hurt the team come tournament time. This allows the younger player to push the older ones and keep practice competitive every day.

i'm saying my answer is i'd move up the best players based on the potential they posses not based on age or grade.
