Finals tonite at Notre Dame - Lady Ryle freshman team over Lady Camels 39 -22. Ryle finishes 25 - 2 after also defeating Walton, Scott and Highland in the frosh tournament, while CC ends a great 18 - 4 season after getting through St Henry, Conner, and Holy Cross before falling to Ryle tonight.

Congratulations to the Lady Raiders Freshman basketball team. They played a great game jumping out to a 20-6 lead and never looked back. This team has been fun to watch this year. Also congratulations to Madison Jones and Aimee Jump for making the all-tournament team and for Manami Horiuchi for being named MVP of the tournament.

Congrats to Ryle! They have a nice freshman group. One question...Do some of the girls also play up at Ryle. I am not starting any trouble, I am just curious if numbers in basketball are even down at a school the size of Ryle. What I'm getting at is, even if you're a large school, you still may have numbers issues if you just don't have girls interested in bball.

 

Any thoughts?

Ryle has 3 freshman who do not play any freshman ball. Ryle had so many injuries this year they had to bring up a few of the freshman only girls to play JV. Ryle had pretty good numbers this year, but have 4 girls in the program that have missed all or most of the season due to injury.

I agree. That's why I asked. I keep hearing about less bball players because of soccer and vball. But a school the size of Ryle should be able to fill spots unless it's worse that I thought.

I am a Campbell fan and glad. I would be embarassed to be associated with that group. These are 14 and 15 year old girls. Cheer for yor team not against the opponent.

Wow! That kinda surprises me actually. Most of the freshman I know from Ryle are pretty seasoned players with families that have been around the game. Not saying it didn't happen, just surprised.

Actually, the Ryle parents and fans have been nothing but class all year. When the announcer said that it was because of a group of younger kids, probably elementary age, sitting together in the stands. One of the kids made a loud noise as a Campbell player was shooting a free throw. It was very quiet in the gym, which is why it seemed really loud. Not condoning the action, just wanted to clear up that it was not the parents or adults associated with this group. Just a group of younger boys who thought they were helping their big sister's team out by trying to distract the opponent.

Did not see any problems with Ryle or CC parents. Was nicely reffd game so just minimal fussing from few parents on both sides. The refs were actually chuckling at little kids in front row making silly noises which were not actually very loud. Thought it was decent of one CC fan to point out to another CC fan that Ryle's team is, in fact, all freshman when the other fan yelled "NOW you put in the freshman players." when Ryle emptied their 3 person bench late in the game.

 

Ryle fans considerably smaller in numbers and more subdued than CC as Ryle's Jv and Varsity played at the same time at New Cath, but no bad behavior from any of the parents on either side.

 

Kudos to CC all tourney members, and the others that were announced previously. Brittany Fornash, Holly Turner, and Holly Schwarre from Campbell -I think. CC growing their program nicely, too.

Couple things to add. I heard the Birds gave Ryle all they wanted in their game and was actually up 5 with about 3 minutes to play. If they could have made any free throws, they may have been able to knock them off. Heard they were like 0-7 from the line in the last couple minutes. I think that's pretty impressive for a team that has no freshman, a couple 7th graders and a 6th grader who was their leaging scorer. The Birds future looks attractive.

 

Also in that conversation, the response was that the Ryle fans were nothing but a class act. Many commented on the efforts of the young Birds after the game. Kudos to the Ryle fans!
