Here are the previews of the district tournaments that are in the 14th Region.

 

 

 

53rd District

June Buchanan will host but it will be played at Knott County Central High School

 

Feb. 18 6:00 PM June Buchanan/Jenkins

Feb. 19 7:30 PM Cordia/Letcher County Central

Feb. 20 6:00 PM June Buchanan/Jenkins vs. Knott County Central

Feb. 22 7:00 PM Championship

 

 

 

The favorite in this district is Knott County Central, they've won every district game so far this season (9-0) but don't count out neither the Cordia Lions or Letcher County Central Cougars. Who ever wins that game will give Knott County Central fits. Knott County Central defeated Cordia twice during the season, (61-49 & 59-48). Knott County Central defeated Letcher County Central twice during the regular season (61-47 & 69-56) but in the end I think Patriots prevail and win their 4th straight district championship heading into the regional tournament.

 

 

 

 

54th District

Held at Perry County Central High School.

 

 

Feb. 19 7:00 PM Hazard/Perry County Central

Feb. 20 7:00 PM Buckhorn/Leslie County

Feb. 22 7:00 PM Championship

 

 

The Hazard/Perry County Central game will be a knockdown drag out. This is the first time since 2006 that Hazard and Perry County Central has drawn each other. That was then when Hazard eliminated the Perry County Central Commodores 57-49. Hazard would then go on to win the district title defeating Leslie County by 1 (53-52) to win it. Hazard and Perry met earlier in the year in the WYMT Classic, which Perry absolutely demolished the Hazard Bulldogs 65-46. Who ever wins the Hazard/Perry County Central game will end up winning the district championship. Either way one of the top teams in the region, won't be making the trip to Letcher County Central for the regional tournament. Hazard does have their guns back (Hollon and Thompson) that were injured. Thompson has a brace on his wrist but is playing those with these two back it helps the Dawgs chances a lot.

 

 

 

55th District

Held at Wolfe County High School, per KHSAA, past couple years it's been at Breathitt County High School.

 

Feb. 18 7:30 PM Riverside Christian at Wolfe County

Feb. 19 7:30 PM Breathitt County vs. Jackson City

Feb. 21 7:00 PM Championship

 

 

Breathitt and Wolfe hasn't drawn each other since 2008, so 5 straight years that it will be a Wolfe/Breathitt district championship game. Wolfe plays very good in their gym. Breathitt defeated Wolfe County 55-41 earlier in the year at Breathitt County. Breathitt demolished Wolfe in last year's district championship game, winning by 28. Wolfe County's last district championship win came in 2010.

 

 

 

 

 

56th District

Held at Estill County High School.

 

Feb. 18 8 PM Owsley County/Powell County

Feb. 19 8 PM Lee County/Estill County

Feb. 21 7 PM Championship

 

 

Compared to previous years, this year's district tournament is about even as it can be. Estill plays very good at home, in fact the Engineers are something like 7-4/8-4 at home this season with 2 of those losses coming to a state ranked (13th) Southwestern Warriors and East Jessamine Jaguars but one of their home losses came to district rival Lee County in a triple OT thriller. Lee County knows how to win at Estill and last time the district tournament was at Estill (08/09), Lee County left with the district championship. Not being biased or anything but this district tournament might be the best out of the other three in the 14th region. I think the slight favorite goes to Estill County but any of the other teams can win it.
